Quote : | " OnLive ditching monthly charge, goes free; MicroConsole in manufacturing
by Christopher Grant on Oct 4th 2010 4:23PM 47 "Although we wish we could have confirmed no monthly free from the get-go, pioneering a major new video game paradigm is hard," OnLive CEO Steve Perlman writes in a blog post, continuing, "we had to first grow to a large base of regular users before we could understand usage patterns and operating costs."
And just like that, the formerly $14.95 per month service -- which, through its Founding Members program, has offered a year of free service since its launch earlier this year (meaning it never actually collected any monthly fees) -- is free, greatly reducing the mostly psychological barrier many gamers had regarding OnLive. To capitalize on that lower barrier of entry, OnLive is "kicking off this change with the introduction of its Free Trial program for new users to its service," giving curious gamers quick access to the service sans credit card.
With no monthly cost, no credit card needed for sign-up, and plenty of free demos, we're not sure why someone would elect to not at least try the service. Here's how it works: You push buttons and those go to a server somewhere, and then it sends you back video of your game. It's freaky. Not interested until you can get the service on your telly? Perlman notes that "MicroConsole TV Adapters are in manufacturing," giving us hope the device will make its planned 2010 release." |

Here is a preview video of the device with Steve Perlman. I am really thinking about getting one of these. For $100, a free game, and I'll sell an old game or two and I won't really pay that much for it.

Needs better catalog. I think if I didn't already have a PC, PS3, Wii, Xbox360 I'd be all over this. I think with proper marketing it could be big, but doesn't have anything that I'm interested in yet. The spectating shit is neat. 11/22/2010 9:19:26 AM |

Quote : | "A Special Thanks to OnLive Founding Members
After last week’s OnLive Game System announcement, we’ve seen the biggest surge of new users in OnLive’s history. I’m pleased to say that OnLive’s systems handled the load without a hitch and continued to deliver a great experience to everyone simultaneously. Certainly, the OnLive team deserves a lot of credit for building such a solid service offering, despite the immense technical and practical challenges.
But, today I’d like to thank another group of people who also deserve credit for OnLive becoming what it is. These are people who took a chance on OnLive during its early days, at a time when there was far greater uncertainty—and outright skepticism—about OnLive’s future: OnLive’s Founding Members.
The following is a Big Thanks from us to you:
It takes a certain kind of person to try out something that is an entirely new concept, and beyond that, spend hard-earned money on it, believing that it has a future. Because Founding Members like you believed in OnLive, you made it possible for us to analyze OnLive usage patterns, for us to be able to test millions of Internet connections throughout the US, and for us to understand what users like and don’t like. Without your help, we could not have gotten to where we are today. We are very grateful for your help, and we thank you. We’d like to give something back to the people who took a chance on us, as very special

^Perhaps if the available games for $9.99/mo expands, I'll consider it, but the list is short, and pretty shitty right now.
I like how they throw in a year old sports title, which has been replaced by a clearly superior one (NBA 2K10 vs. 2K11)... 12/2/2010 3:49:20 PM |

I got this email and was excited. This is exactly what I hoped the service would be from the start. I just have an issue paying $100 for something that has one purpose when I could pay $150 for a netbook that does the same thing and a lot more and get a better xbox360 controller. I'm still tempted to buy one as an engineer and someone working in the same industry, just to play 12/3/2010 1:10:17 AM |

The Wall Street Journal reports game-streaming service will also launch video offerings next year via subscription, "other" price models.
Last week, OnLive announced its $10-per-month PlayPack, which will grant subscribers unlimited access to a library of 40 titles via the online game-streaming service. This week, the startup's CEO, Steve Perlman, told the Wall Street Journal that his company is planning to offer a similar arrangement next year for movies.
OnLive will become a competitor to Netflix next year.
Speaking to the Journal, Perlman said that OnLive would offer movies and video via a subscription model and "other pricing schemes." Though the company did not specify which schemes it might use, a clue can be gleaned from the pricing of its game offerings. Currently, the company offers three-day and five-day passes to single games, with prices ranging from $6 to $9. Full PlayPasses for a la carte games--the equivalent of a sale--vary from $4 to $50 and allow unlimited play of the game.
Perlman cited his concern about the increasingly rapid rise of Netflix--which has gone from more than 5 million to 15 million users in just three and a half years--as a reason for getting into the video business. "I think 'concerned' is a gross understatement," said Perlman. "There's a snowball effect. At some point they [Netflix] have so much content, if you want to get your stuff distributed you have to go with them."
OnLive's disclosure comes a week after Reuters reported that Microsoft was in talks with cable providers and channels to turn the Xbox 360 into a cable box of sorts. That console, as well as the Wii and PlayStation 3, currently supports Netflix video streaming with native applications. " |

Insanely tempting, but I still say no. Onlive is great fun, but the quality is noticeably inferior to actually having the real game on PC. so if it was a game I wanted to play, I'd do it that way. Now, if my gaming PC dies or I didn't already have one, then and only then would I jump on it. 2/26/2011 11:03:12 AM |

if they released an android client i'd be more inclined. i've called them and talked to their partnership people a few times but they blow me off. they must not think i'm a real company. 2/26/2011 12:32:46 PM |

In addition to the free games, you can sign up for the PlayPack (which is $10/month) with the first month for free and you can cancel at anytime. There is alike 40+ games in the play pack. I would say this is overall a sweet deal and if you don't like it you can always sell the Microconsole on eBay and make most of your money back, and still be able to use Onlive through he PC client. 2/27/2011 9:18:40 AM |

OnLive launches CloudLift. CloudLift could be explained as Steam have a cloud component. Which is awesome, you can buy your games and download them like you would from Steam, but you also have the luxury of a cloud component that lets you play anywhere you want on a supported device. I think its a great Idea, but it might be a little pricy. Right now they are $15/month, but I think it should be the same price as Netflix or maybe a few dollars more. I will have to try this out. This really is awesome I think. 3/5/2014 6:04:51 PM |
