as tragic as this story has been, there have been many spills that have been just as bad, if not worse than this one, that have not come to the western world's attention because they are in poorer countries.ExxonMobil in Nigeria this past year for example (also doesnt help that dumbass rebels blew up a shell pipeline)http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/may/30/oil-spills-nigeria-niger-delta-shell

If this shit doesn't give us a kick in the ass to move off of fossil fuels, I'm not sure what will.
6/3/2010 11:56:31 PM
That's pretty fucked up. I had no idea that spill happened in nigerplz. What an awesome way to kill our fucking planet with a quickness.
6/3/2010 11:57:55 PM
^^ it won't, you know. we're a nation of quick fixes. moving off of fossil fuels will be a monumental undertaking, and there's no political will to try, even when faced with bald environmental disaster.[Edited on June 3, 2010 at 11:58 PM. Reason : .]

^^ BP has an atrocious safety record. Add that to the worst oil spill in the history of the country, probably irreparable harm to the economies of the area affected. Should they go bankrupt? Possibly yes.[Edited on June 4, 2010 at 12:05 AM. Reason : .]

Going bankrupt is only a small function of those things you listed. The major part of going bankrupt is running out of money. Unless all their oil production ceased for some time, they will not go bankrupt. They can still sell their crude to someone willing to buy it, whether it is the US or not.
6/4/2010 12:10:53 AM
let them be sued into oblivion. since americans are so litigious and all, thanks for reminding us tony hayward.
6/4/2010 12:11:59 AM
if everyone on the planet boycotted BP, they would just sell their gasoline to Exxon and the other companies. they will continue to profit until demand for oil goes down

I said economies, not environment. There are people who are watching their livelihoods disappear right now.
6/4/2010 12:19:59 AM
i keep seeing that it's the worst oil spill in US history ... but really has there been one worse anywhere else in the world? i dont remember hearing about an oil spill that kept going and going with an open faucet
6/4/2010 12:20:34 AM
Gulf War
6/4/2010 12:23:23 AM
i registered as a volunteer to help with the recovery and whatnot of wildlife impacted by the oil in louisiana. i'm there for work all the time (in fact, im there now) and this whole thing is absolutely depressing. all my charity spending is going toward this cause for the next several years. it hits close to home for me as for BP going bankrupt. i wish they would truly have to pay for what they've done. the fact of the matter is, their liability is limited by a federal law related to oil spills. the "spill" is potentially being investigated as a criminal act, which is a start i guess.what worries me as much as the spill is hurricane season with all that fucking oil milling about...and optimum is right about their safety record. its so outrageous its almost comical how they got away with it.
6/4/2010 12:24:23 AM
^^^^ you did, but I was inferring beyond that. Most of the economic affect is tourism and fishing....the fish will return b/c the environment is resilient. Tourism may actually take longer to recover b/c of the publicity fallout but it would recover. Some people may have to change careers, but that happens all the time for many reasons.^^^ You might try clicking on the link up the page a bit. This one probably isn't even into the top 20 yet. During the gulf war the Iraqi's had the great idea of popping open a bunch of wells as they left Kuwait and dumped a shit ton of oil into the ocean. And by shit ton I mean 520 times more than the Valdez spill. [Edited on June 4, 2010 at 12:27 AM. Reason : .]
6/4/2010 12:24:56 AM
i thought it could take like YEARS and decades even for the fishing environment and thus economy to recover.

isn't growth also an indicator of a "booming" economy? and unemployment rates?if so, florida is fuuuuucked. but at least you got disney world.
6/4/2010 1:04:51 AM
^^ Florida also has 18.5 million people, compared to 4.5 million for Louisiana and 3 million for Mississippi. Having more than twice the GDP isn't so meaningful when you also have more than twice the population.Florida does have a higher GDP per capita than either (Mississippi's is 50th in the nation), but I'm just pointing out that you have to be careful what statistics you cite if you want to sound authoritative. On that matter, to get a better comparison still, you would want to adjust the GDP per capita for cost of living or purchasing power parity, and there, Louisiana might come out ahead of Florida (not sure, haven't seen the numbers).[Edited on June 4, 2010 at 1:34 AM. I love how they said the worst case scenario would be it not getting capped by Christmas... I would say the worst case scenario is if a hurricane goes over that oil. Then the Gulf will be fucked even more...
6/4/2010 8:30:45 AM
yeah he (optimum) posted those in a thread which was reporting the suicides by many factory workers due to harsh working conditions.yup, he called that thread stupid, said it wasn't news, and said we shouldn't single out the company whose products they were making!!!so if i am trolling, he was trolling as well. either that, or he is a heartless monster (but has heart for animals).

Echoing these sentiments: How many of you, who are posting in this thread bashing a company that drills desperately for the oil that the billions of automobiles consume every day, drove an oil-powered automobile to the place where the computer is that you're posting from right now?
