I've been wanting a cheap 35mm SLR for a while now. Don't have much photography experience, but I wanted something easy to learn the ropes on.
So I just bought a Minolta X-370 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290464100389&autorefresh=true#ht_576wt_1137
$35 bucks!
Any thoughts? 8/21/2010 5:48:51 PM

I would say learning on an SLR instead of a DSLR could possibly be quite expensive in processing fees 8/21/2010 11:07:32 PM

True, but at least you can't lean on the Photoshop crutch and post process your way to a respectable image. 8/22/2010 2:23:30 AM

Can't be more expensive than dropping a couple hundred on a DSLR and never really getting into it. $35 for the camera, a couple bucks for a cheap bag and $10-20 every few weeks in development costs isn't going to break the bank. I'd rather learn on a manual SLR, so I have a decent idea what all these damn letters and numbers mean going forward. Plus old stuff is rad. 8/22/2010 8:25:29 PM

You can learn much faster on a DSLR IMHO. You can get an older body and kit lens decently cheap on craigslist as people upgrade. Just to see the effect of the exposure of your experimentation, you have to go get the film developed. On a digital SLR, you get to see the exposure of your shot immediately after. For learning purposes I think a used D70 would be ideal.

Fact is, you can learn either way. Both film and digital photography are learned through experimentation and trial and error. I can understand why some people would want to learn on digital because it's easy, but for others, learning on film and experiencing that extra challenge is something they want to do.
These days any idiot can pick up a dslr and Photoshop and call themselves a photographer. If you can do it right on film, I think there is something to be said about that. That is the challenge I'm talking about. 8/22/2010 10:33:42 PM

Ernie All American 45943 Posts user info edit post |
Trying to learn quickly or by some marginally less expensive route aren't concerns. I bought a pretty neat camera and I'm going to have fun. Or not, and it won't be a big loss. 8/22/2010 11:10:57 PM

We're not talking about photoshop, we're talking about trial and error and seeing what changes you made to the camera and immediate results - instead of taking notes on what exactly you did differently, and a week later seeing your result. Learning on a DSL might be the indy cool-kid way to learn, but it sure wont ever be the easiest way. If someone wants to learn on an SLR, more power too them, I am sure the challenge will be memorable and may just be worth it in the end.

I'm not trying to be a dick here, just trying to point out the other side of the argument. Maybe my comment about "any idiot..." was a little crass, but I don't see anything wrong with learning on film.
And I don't get the preconceived notion that only "indy cool-kids" would want to learn on film or use film.

UPS just brought the camera. Looks to be in really good condition, and it even came with a few things not mentioned or pictured on eBay: some filters, a pretty decent bag and the original, hand-written recepit, dated 8/23/86. 8/25/2010 3:13:41 PM

We are on the second roll of 120 film from Joie's Diana. First roll was no good because of a light leak after the pictures were exposed. I didn't roll the film up tight enough. 9/4/2010 12:29:27 PM

My pinhole camera film got f-ed somehow and none of the pictures turned out. I think I either had a light leak in the camera, or exposed the film accidentally taking it out. 10/30/2010 8:19:55 PM

Joie and I are going to test out a couple of my older cameras tomorrow, time permitting.
I've got an Argus Autronic 35 to test:
 (not my photo)
And hopefully an Argus Seventy-Five. This one shoots 620 film. Since they don't make 620 film anymore I thought I would have to re-spool some 120 film, but the camera bag that came with the camera came with 1 expired roll of 620 film I might use... it expired in 1973! I've got to tinker with the shutter tonight, it gets stuck sometimes. If I can fix it up, I'd love to see if I can get anything off that old roll of 620. On second thought, I might re-spool some 120 to test it out with first since I have 50+ rolls of that stuff...
(again, not my photo... but I do have the flash and unused bulbs) 12/30/2010 9:53:10 PM

TRIPLE POST! SUSPEND!!1
So I took apart my Argus Seventy-Five to check out the shutter mechanism... I know it's never a good thing to put something back together and have parts left over, but after a quick oil-up (and a few components lighter), the thing seems to be working pretty well. 12/30/2010 11:05:11 PM

I have just gotten into this. Only a couple of shots were worth a shit from my first roll. Getting used to adjusting to avoid over/under exposure.

That is totally unedited.

This one was taken with the intention of editing the color/grayscale into it. So it is the intended image. Just not achievable with the film. 2/23/2011 3:21:57 AM

Last roll of KodaChrome shot by the famous Steve McCurry. Really cool guy, meet him almost two years ago at a photography seminar and really had a good chat about his travel experiences.
http://www.npr.org/blogs/pictureshow/2010/07/23/128728114/kodachrome
Also, if anyone is interested, I got a shit ton of film rolls left from school laying around that I need to sell off. I got 135 and 120 rolls of black & white, color neg, and chrome in various flavors; but mostly black & whites.
And I got a box of 200 b&w photo paper and another box of 200 RA4 paper. Both are Glossy I believe.
