Alright, I'm kidding about Boston... what I meant to say was (my town):

History:

We have an inoperable/condemned town hall. Our current town hall is in a trailer.

Culture:

There are 7 different types of Christian churches in this town.

...epic culture shot

My neighbor.

- I'd post a picture of a gas station... but we don't have one.

Misc:

We make yo' shoe soles, yo.

We ice & snow get storms that take power out for a week.

We have a SWAT team that has and will never be used.

Nightlife. Place is poppin'.

...on a busy night:

1757: Probably the last time something interesting happened here.

Upside:

Epic fall seasons.

That's true. That's why Tokyo doesn't have a subway system.

I've never been to LA but honestly the ONLY negative seems to be earthquakes.

I here the weather is absurd.

I live in miami now and i've heard LA is miami weather minus humidity.

I'll probably move there after school.

As for beautiful cities... i would say that the following are much nicer based on aesthetics and geography.

Also, you know that Los Angeles is only 30 or so square miles bigger than NYC, so your "too big for a subway system" excuse is bunk.

But yeah, I would rather spend the rest of my life in Monte Carlo than in LA any day.

I've seen a bit of the world:
Italy, Germany, Switzerland, the Caribbean, Mexico, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Serbia

I stand by my assertion that New York, NY (my present home) is the greatest city

that said - what's so great about cities?
I want to live in a rural area (that has great public transportation)

gtfo. los angeles proper includes all of los angeles county and los angeles does have a subway system thats pretty damn fast and good. the only problem is that it doesnt go all over the county. I used to commute from downtown to hollywood in 20 minutes.

This isn't about where you want to spend the rest of your life or even the best city to live in. I've already said san diego has the best quality of life. I'm just saying LA is the greatest city in the same way many would say the US is the greatest nation. Many people say NYC is the best city in the world and I dont think anyone actually think its the best to LIVE IN. Theres a difference.

^Ahahahaha, win.

LA is the fucking asshole of california. In fact fuck So Cal, it's time we cut our losses and give that fucking hell hole back to Mexico. Miami is fucked too, you couldn't pay me to live in there. I'd really like to cut off the end of Florida and kick it over to cuba.

Cultural diveristy, eh. Fuck all that shit, it's some fucked up gay hippie concept that can never actually work. Anytime I hear diversity I have to roll my fucking eyes at some douche who thinks it's what the world needs. Fuck off.

I rather like LA. I've only really been in Huntington Beach, Irvine and Long Beach, though. I enjoyed it.

Been to NY 3 times. Probably the most overrated place I've ever been, if only for the pretense projected by its inhabitants and migrants alike. It's ridiculous. There are some really amazing things about NYC, but really. . .meh.

Chicago is the motherfucking jam.

I'm from NY and I have to agree it's way overrated. Outside the city there are some nice places to be. Best place in the US for me was Dallas. People didn't carry on with all this fruity bullshit like they do other places.

Vancouver is pretty awesome. It has the second most restaurants/bars per square mile in the world. Second only to... Manhattan.

I've spent extensive time in Los Angeles (my sister lived there for five years) and New York City and to me there is absolutely no comparison whatsoever. New York City is far and away a better living experience and a better place to visit. I wouldn't even have Los Angeles in my Top 20 cities to visit in the United States. It was just flat out awful. It's a disaster to get around, it's a disaster to live in and it is just too spread out to be an enjoyable place to visit.

Los Angeles IS, however, better than any city not named Austin in all of Texas. Worst. State. Ever.

But this is all opinions.

I've traveled all over Europe, and Venice and Amsterdam probably stood out more than any other cities to me with all of the canals (Venice more than Amsterdam, but Amsterdam was till beautiful).

But I'd have to say that Barcelona was probably my favorite city and if someone asked me what the "greatest" one was, it would be Barcelona

I'd prefer NYC over LA any day. Not having to drive to get where you want to is a huge plus in my book, especially with the volume of people in both areas.

In general though, both suck. I'd much rather be back in a smaller urban area.. like Charleston... man I miss that town

*EDIT* To the people that say NYC is overrated, I totally agree. My fiance and I were roaming the lower west side a week ago, and marveled at how all the tourists just flock to the streets. Who in their right mind enjoys that sort of environment? There are so many good things about the city, but the idiots just ruin it for me.

^Oh yeah...seconded Charleston.

I use to think that I wanted to live in a big city (NYC, Chicago, Atlanta)...but I think I'm good with Charleston. Has a lot of benefits of big cities (culture, festivals, amazing food) with smaller, Southern feel. Oh...and beaches.

look the tourist shit in NYC is overrated

the city itself is not

once you are an insider you find out about all the amazing shit going on
though I'm sure some of you would never be hip enough to find out

in NYC I could go to 2 different events every night for the rest of my life if my body and wallet could handle it

it is a HARD and UNCOMFORTABLE place to live but it makes up for that in opportunity - especially for a guy like me

I'm aware that asking for a rural area with good public transport is a bit of a contradiction
that's why it was a joke - can you say joke?

second point:

this thread is not about the GREATEST CITY IN THE WORLD (TO LIVE IN) - it is just the greatest city

Glad you clarified that. So it's a city of guys like you, huh? Sitting around at all the little cafes eating arugula and goat cheese sangwiches, drinking half-caf lattes, wallowing in your smuginess. Look at me, I live on the upper west side.

Seriously though, I've been to all 5 burroughs and they're all pretty much the same just change the people and incomes. Plus it's dirty as hell, someone used to joke that when it rained NYC made it's own gravy (like the dog food)...I know, however, it's not really a joke.

LA is so big and has so many worlds that its easy to go there and go to a bunch of places that suck. la has everything. it has every world within one city. Thats why its the greatest. It has a shitton of shitty and a shitton of really nice areas. A shitton of entertainment, slums, rich areas, movie stars, gangs, everything.

You can get a nyc experience out of many parts of la but you can't get an la experience anywhere else. The same can be said swapping nyc out with venice, amsterdam tokyo mexico seoul and almost every major city. LA has it all, Literally.

Many are still confusing greatest city with favorite city, best city to live in or city with highest overall quality of life.

True. I remember as a kid in the 80s NYC was sketch as hell. We would go to visit my aunt and uncle that lived in SoHo but there were bums and trash covering every square inch of the city. I doubt many people remember anymore when Times Square used to just be where you went to go to strip shows and pick up a hooker.

People can talk shit about Guliani but if there is one thing he did well it was clean up NYC.

LA sucks ass. traffic, pollution, sprawls of bullshit suburbs, expensive, etc. the list goes on.

in California alone, San Diego kicks the SHIT out of LA.

as far as greatest cities in the world, three come to mind.

my hometown bias. excellent nightlife, constantly tops lists for various feats (most wired, best for singles, recession-proof, safety, etc.), great people, 3 hours from beach/mountians, some historical character, home of the Wolfpack, etc.

Prague is the shit. Excellent transportation, cheap as hell, historic/ancient, clean, practically everything is legal. what more could you want? this city really is the new Amsterdam in many respects as well.

Charleston, SC. on the ocean, southern proper, historic, clean, beautiful, great southern city.

So does San Francisco. And I have heard GREAT things about Prague, though I've never been.

Also, LA proper is really not THAT geographically diverse. It's mostly in the valley aside from the Hollywood hills.

I still don't really know what this means but Los Angeles and New York are almost always at the top of any listing of the world's most culturally diverse large cities.

I'm leaning towards this being a troll thread and nothing more.

Is that right? Because London and New York City don't have any problem with doing it despite being similar sized or even quite a bit larger.

Los Angeles - 498.3 sq mi
London - 659 sq mi
New York City - 468.9 sq mi

The real reason is because downtown is so awful that there is no central location where people in the awful suburban sprawl in and around LA travel in to work such as Midtown or Wall Street in the city.

Quote :
"that LA metro map is misleading, it's full of 'proposed' lines -- the metro is currently nowhere near that extensive, it doesn't even go to LAX or the beach"

And thank you. I knew they didn't have that extensive a subway/light rail system there! Not even close. And considering the pathetic CA government -- both state and local -- it will never, ever ever be built.
