"when was this? i actually read somewhere about how the crime has declined in detroit over last 2-3 years"

I was there from 1988 to 2007. It was kinda funny driving down I-75 to Comerica park and seeing all the burned down houses lining the highway. They tore a lot of them down though for the Superbowl a few years ago.

"8. Charleston"

this isn't fair. I bet they included North Charleston in their estimate, which had a record high murder rate for a few years. North Charleston is actually a separate city with its own mayor and whatnot. What most people would consider Charleston (the peninsula and maybe West Ashley) is much safer.

to be fair, my accounts of Charlotte are mostly favorable because the communities I live near are:
http://www.thesanctuary-crescent.com/ (Dan Marino and Chris Chambers have houses in this community)
http://www.thepalisadescc.com/fw/main/Home-1.html
a mile down the road from where I live there are a couple million dollar homes in neither community, and not far from my house in a community called riverpointe lives one Larry Johnson (former hornet) and he has an indoor basketball court in his house.

I also spend a lot of time in Tega Cay, SC... it's a lot like a lakeside smaller version of Cary, they don't really have crime there.

It's not the nicest area of charlotte, but it's very nice and there's not much violent crime.

There are areas of Charlotte I don't even want to drive though. Freedom Drive, Beatties Ford, Rozzelles Ferry Rd, Lakeview... and to a lesser extend couple neighborhoods off of Nations Ford, Archdale...

^^ I'm guessing they're not because they didn't release their 2009 crime info by the time this list was made.

Since a city the size of Los Angeles is geographically and numerically huge, the wealthier districts will balance out the poorer districts.

A more accurate count would be America's Most Dangerous Zip Codes.

When I saw Charleston listed I immediately assumed it was due to North Charleston, that place is scary as fuck dawg.
