I'm trying to justify getting one of these for my wife, it just seems like it will be really expensive to have to buy a new book every week. She reads at least one book a week. Normally she checks multiple books out at the library, which is obviously FREE.
I might have to hold off on buying the kindle or sony touch until they come up with a way to "check books out" with the e-reader. 11/9/2010 9:14:38 PM |

I was under the impression there were a lot of free books available, especially classics
I guess it depends on what type of books she's reading 11/10/2010 8:36:09 AM |

^^ unless I'm mistaken, wake county libraries (and many others) support check-outs with the kindle through Adobe's system. 11/10/2010 7:40:47 PM |

Ahahahaha my wife just found out the hard way that Kindles don't do page numbers. Makes it kind of hard to do citations or in-class readings for school. I think she's ready to burn Amazon to the ground now. 11/17/2010 7:14:49 PM |

you can still cite a kindle book as a source, there is a standard format for doing so.

sorry for the reposts, keep missing the 30 minute window.
Good news, I was able to view the library file on my kindle!!! I used the information provided at http://i-u2665-cabbages.blogspot.com/2009/02/circumventing-adobe-adept-drm-for-epub.html and http://know-how.posterous.com/free-epubs-from-adobe-adept-drm

For anyone looking at the cover, it's pricey but very awesome. I got the brown one and it looks great, and the light works perfectly.
It does basically double the weight of the kindle, but it's no more than a thick mass market paperback. For me it's easier to hold with the cover also. 12/1/2010 1:51:54 AM |

Wait, so for Kindle there's no way to keep track of page numbers? So if the book isn't done in shortish chapters then you're just fucked for educational use?
Damnit guys, I was SET on a Kindle, but this means it would be WORTHLESS for my classes. 12/1/2010 3:36:27 AM |

i also have the ridiculously overpriced amazon cover...but have to say, it really is awesome...probably wouldn't have dropped the $60 myself, but it was a gift
i REALLY liked the cover i had for my sony reader...it also had an LED light, but it had a flexing neck and required a separate AAA battery...i thought i wouldn't like the integrated light, but i love that it's powered by the kindle itself and the fact that it shines just perfectly to minimize spillover (so reading in bed doesn't keep my wife up), though i could wish for it to have a low and a high setting since i don't think it needs to be as bright as it is...it is certainly heavier than i expected, and i'm concerned about the elastic strap wearing out, but it is the best one available at the moment12/1/2010 8:45:24 AM |

It keeps track of percentage and "location". you can also jump to chapters, bookmarks, etc. I think what you mean is there's no way to keep track of pages compared to the physical book. Like page 50 in the actual book is where on the Kindle. Right? Don't know if you can do that. 12/1/2010 9:36:26 AM |

Citing isn't my concern. What I'm asking is, are you able to go to a page number in the book at your choosing without having bookmarked it? 12/1/2010 3:56:49 PM |

you can go to a location. you would need a page number tool like that posted to convert a page number to a location.
you can also search too if you don't know the location.1/12/2011 1:55:18 AM |

So I noticed my Kindle started showing a slight crack in the lower left of the case near the screen. Called Amazon and they said it was because of the defective leather case I had gotten. The guy was extremely helpful and is overnighting me a new Kindle and refunded the leather case and gave me an additional $25 and recommended I get the newer case or the case with a light.
I am very impressed with Amazon's customer service. Didn't even have to wait to talk to someone. 1/14/2011 1:26:29 PM |

Kindle adds page numbers (that match with paper and ink versions) and shared notes (like from a professor)

^Is it really that hard for y'all to take the 3 seconds it takes to convert epub to Kindle? The software is free and it's so easy.
And you can lend books right?

Or you could just log into someones account. Download all their books. Then back into yours. Magic! All their books are yours! (I think this loop hole still works). 2/11/2011 8:32:32 PM |

You can get a kindle $25 cheaper now if you're willing to live with ads as screensavers and on your home screen. I'd do that no question if I didn't already have one.

similar story. somehow i managed to break my kindle's screen while i was traveling from RDU to atlanta. i called amazon about possible repair costs when i returned home and was immediately connected with a US based, english speaking customer service rep via the "call me now" on amazon's site. the guy apologized for the broken kindle and expedited me a new one. when i logged into my amazon account there was a pre-paid shipping label in my "returns" tab to send in the broken one. because amazon only wants the broken kindle, i also got a new charger out of the deal.
amazon is awesome and the kindle is great as well.
