i can understand the argument that IP is a misnomer

but people should be paid for their work

and the only way to pay people for work of this nature is to recognize the effort by way of commodifying its fruits

No, because if I take the physical property, they no longer have it.
But I can take copies of the non-physical content, and they still have it."

My point is that with almost anything physical that relates to the senses (art, architectural design etc.) you are paying for more than just the physical contents. You want a painting? You aren't paying for just the materials and the delivery, you are paying for the creativity and time that went into the painting. Once that painting is created you think it is only worth the price of the paint and the canvas? If reasonable, do you also think there is nothing wrong at that point with mass producing the painting? The idea and the imagery are what sell the painting, not the physical items that make up the purchase.

I've been in this argument plenty of times before with a few select people.

You probably can't point me to any articles that say anything profoundly different than what a few people have shown me in the past. Sure some of the petty things related to intellectual property and copyright are BS and I can agree with that, but stretching it to stuff like software, music, movies etc just seems like a cheap way to justify leeching off of other people's work.

We'll have to agree to disagree.

Not trying to be a jerk but the same applies here. This is not a new argument and no one has presented me with anything other than some philosophical ideas and their own opinions to back it up.

Maybe it's a personal moral thing or maybe it is because I am also a musician that is causing me to be blind to your profound logic but we are just on two completely different levels when looking at this I guess. The whole argument as it applies to things like music just seems ridiculously petty and a way to justify not paying someone for creating something you are actively choosing to enjoy.

No big deal.

"Not trolling.
I honestly believe that if so many people continue to inflate the unsustainable "intellectual property bubble", the entire world economy will collapse when it pops. This is truly a basket that we shouldn't be putting all of our eggs into."

I promise you that the world economy will not collapse due to sales of $12 CD's and records regardless of whether the sales go through the roof or drop to zero.

If anyone starts packaging shitty CD future sales into a bond and selling the bonds to investors I'll start to worry.
