Quote :
"I agree. I've long thought there should be more publicity of issue-polling by age group.
If we can show that support or opposition to some issue comes nearly unanimously from 65+ year-olds, we should say to them, "Hey. This is inevitable -- stop holding us up.""

I agree, its hard to find good data. But Gallup has been tracking the "moral acceptability of gay and lesbian relations" for sometime which is now in the majority of Americans approve category

Their age divides are at over or under 50, but it is pretty clear over 50 opposes, under 50 supports. The same poll also said a majority of political independents are supportive. The poll also showed a majority of America Catholics no longer have moral objections to gay relationships which is pretty cool. I mean anecdotal evidence like Catholics for Marriage Equality starting to play a larger roll in these debates, and countries like Spain, Argentina, Portugal, Belgium, and the Netherlands are all places where Catholicism is the predominant religion and they've been places to embrace full marriage equality. Not to say anything about other forms of Christianity, I mean South Africa for example went for marriage equality. (The Episcopal Church has really taken the lead on supporting equality for gay people in some ways in terms of being open to gay bishops)

And much of the western world has some form of recognition:
Quote :
"Legal recognition of same-sex couples
Same-sex marriage

Argentina*
Belgium
Canada
Iceland
Netherlands

Norway
Portugal
South Africa
Spain
Sweden
Performed in some jurisdictions

Mexico: DF
United States: CT, DC, IA, MA, NH, VT, Coquille
Recognized, not performed

Aruba (Dutch only)
Israel
Netherlands Antilles (Dutch only)
United States: CA (conditional), MD, NY, RI
Civil unions and
registered partnerships

Andorra
Austria
Colombia
Czech Republic
Denmark
Ecuador
Finland
France
Germany
Greenland

Hungary
Ireland*
Luxembourg
New Caledonia
New Zealand
Slovenia
Switzerland
Wallis and Futuna
United Kingdom
Uruguay
Performed in some jurisdictions

Australia: ACT, NSW, TAS, VIC
Mexico: COA
United States: CA, CO, HI, ME, NJ, NV, OR, WA, WI
Venezuela: ME
Recognized, not performed

Isle of Man (UK only)
Unregistered co-habitation

Australia
Brazil

Croatia
Israel
In some regions

United States: MD, RI"

So it really is only a matter of time in some sense, and no amount of busing old people around the country and speaking in tongues is going to change that.

I agree with this, but it's not a good basis for making gay marriage illegal. Separation of church and state and all that jazz.

can i just take a second and proclaim my love for desmond tutu? my <3 for him was further solidified by his dancing at the world cup ceremonies.

Quote :
""But they are sinners," I can hear the preachers and politicians say. "They are choosing a life of sin for which they must be punished." My scientist and medical friends have shared with me a reality that so many gay people have confirmed, I now know it in my heart to be true. No one chooses to be gay. Sexual orientation, like skin color, is another feature of our diversity as a human family. Isn't it amazing that we are all made in God's image, and yet there is so much diversity among his people? Does God love his dark- or his light-skinned children less? The brave more than the timid? And does any of us know the mind of God so well that we can decide for him who is included, and who is excluded, from the circle of his love?

The wave of hate must stop. Politicians who profit from exploiting this hate, from fanning it, must not be tempted by this easy way to profit from fear and misunderstanding. And my fellow clerics, of all faiths, must stand up for the principles of universal dignity and fellowship. Exclusion is never the way forward on our shared paths to freedom and justice."

^^I just meant to make fun of the old folks speaking in tongues, but when Indy asked about polling showing the old young divide on gay relationships, I posted it.

yeah, that whole generation has fucked the dog in a lot of ways.

Quote :
"im conservative to the point that i dont feel that the government should be sayin who should be married and who cant

so in a funny way i am pro-gay marriage
"

Quote :
"you aint gonna see my ass in a tutu and a rainbow towel tied around my neck with my balls oozin out of my shorts lobbyin for fag marriage tho"

Exactly. Gross and weird is not reason enough to make it illegal. It's not the government's business...and all KINDS of stuff is tied to marriage that shouldn't be. Get rid of the institution altogether from a legal sense, other than the courts enforcing contracts if people decide to draw them up.

Quote :
"I know the truth of a proposition is independent of who's making it....but I think (?) you've been rather hard done by marriage laws. that doesn't mean they don't provide benefits in other cases, though. for one thing, removing the government from marriage would, in effect, desanctify it, leading to people not taking their marriages so seriously, higher rates of divorce, etc. Just pulled that out of my ass, of course."

I think family law is really fucked up, but I've never been married.

and marriage is already pretty thoroughly desanctified. Getting the gov't out of it won't make it worse. Shit, I think the Bible-belt states have some of the worst divorce rates.
