Quote : | "I said I wouldn't call for a plane if I had a reasonable expectation that I could do without." |
No shit?
Quote : | "Flying an airtanker is a shitload more dangerous than flying anything commercial." |
Quantify shitload. It's only A LITTLE more dangerous.
Quote : | "-First, flying in bad fireweather is dangerous. Windys are typically gusty and the atmosphere is usually very unstable. " |
It's equally dangerous for all pilots.
Quote : | " You can have sudden downdrafts while you're flying a plane 20 feet above the tops of trees." |
Don't fly a plane at 20 feet above the top of trees when this happens.
Quote : | "-When the pilot hits the dump button he loses control of the plane for a split second." |
As expected.
Quote : | "-Smoke columns aren't fun and you have to fly through them if you expect to put the water where it needs to be. Smoke columns can carry flaming debris. I've heard tales from pilots of flying by small trees and 4 foot logs being carried up by the convection column.
" |
Obviously an exaggerated tale since no tanker planes have ever crashed due to flying debris.
Quote : | "-Drafting is dangerous. We broke our Type 3 tanker, our Canadair CL-215, on the Tower Ridge Fire in Stokes County in 2008. I was there but didn't see it happen. The plane was drafting and hit an underwater stump." |
Maybe he shouldn't draft in shallow water. If that's not enough, maybe you should ask the state to dredge a designated drafting lane marked by bouys in all lakes that you draft from.
Quote : | " How many underwater stumps do commercial planes encounter? " |
I'll let John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Jr field this question.

I'm amazed at how stupid you make yourself out to be.
Quote : | " It's equally dangerous for all pilots." |
Yeah, because all pilots fly close to the ground near wildfires
Quote : | "Don't fly a plane at 20 feet above the top of trees when this happens." |
Read motherfucker. SUDDEN means you don't know when it will happen.
You have to drop the water very low to the ground or else it evaporates before it hits the ground. But you already knew that because you know everything about firefighting...
Quote : | "Obviously an exaggerated tale since no tanker planes have ever crashed due to flying debris." |
My pilot will think this is a funny statement. Just because google didn't show you any articles of aircraft going down due to flying debris doesn't mean the debris doesn't cause damage and increase risks.
Quote : | "Maybe he shouldn't draft in shallow water. If that's not enough, maybe you should ask the state to dredge a designated drafting lane marked by bouys in all lakes that you draft from." |
LOL, ok, so now every state needs 5 heavy tankers ans needs to dredge lakes. Every state will need about 10 lakes too so the turn around time between drops is short.8/1/2010 12:57:05 PM |

Perhaps the fire chief should read this to find someone who's got what it takes to get the job done. Clearly you are making this a mission impossible scenario that only James Bond himself can do on his best day. It's retarded.
I bet you'd paint the same picture about driving if this is what the discussion where about.
"Driving is dangerous, tornados can come out of nowhere and blow your car onto roofs of buildings! Don't drive!" 8/1/2010 1:07:50 PM |

Any fire chief would laugh at you because they know more about firefighting than you do 8/1/2010 1:17:49 PM |

I hate that this thread ended. It was amusing.
Hey, guess what. I'm in the mountains at a forest service training session...for air operations! What a coincidence.
