"If I've got to acquire a taste for it...why?"

There's nothing you've ever tried for the first time, didn't like it, then ended up enjoying it later on??

I find that extremely hard to believe. There was a ton of shit I hated as a kid that I love now. I would have slapped you in the face if you had told me 10 years ago that I would absolutely love brussel sprouts one day.

I also think people have more developed and sophisticated palates than others. You probably have a simple palate that can't appreciate things like good wine and good beer. Even people with great palates differ. I worked in a wine bar for three years, and although I am serviceable at wine tasting and being able to identify certain things, I can almost ace a blind beer tasting.

Although everyone is different, even people with a simple palate should at least be able to enjoy and/or appreciate a good beer. It's either mental (its almost impossible to enjoy something when you go in saying to yourself "oh god, why am I drinking this disgusting beer) or you just haven't drank enough of it for your palate to get use to it.

Dude.
I know.
Which is why I even give a shit now. It's like, "Okay, maybe I'm missing out on something. [another try] Heh - or not." Maybe, one day...but I am not holding my breath. Except when there's beer or wine in the immediate vicinity

Two different creatures: tried it, didn't like it, and gave it another chance...and liked it - not the same as setting out with an end goal of liking it. And I am with you 100% on the brussel sprouts

I would say that yes, it used to be mental (I'd smell it, and get turned off right away and a sip would only confirm the conclusion I'd come to based solely on smell). A great side effect of my husband has been that I've lost that fear/judgmental mentality when it comes to food (He convinced me to try many things that I thought were gross, and I realized how fucking wrong I was in so many food-related notions...I had no choice but to learn how to approach new things with a different mindset, since he is right about "It's tasty!" at least 90% of the time)

However:
Beer is still gross. I would guess that I taste (sips from friend's drinks) new beers at least 4 or 5 times a year - and I've been doing this for years. It all tastes the same: bitter as fuck. Sure, this falls under "just haven't drank enough of it for your palate to get use to it." Still leaves the issue I raised earlier: why drink something you have to learn to like? Seems simpler, wiser, and more economical to, after having given that Something multiple honest shots, to stick to what you already like.

How's this: You'll learn to like be on the receiving end of anal sex. If you don't like it, you just haven't done it enough yet. Unless one is actively trying to put it ITB of a girl one doesn't respect, that's not a line most of us dare try.

I actually think this is a great analogy.

Anal sex is akin to this:

You're never going to get use to, or find out if you like it or not, anal sex unless you really commit to giving it a shot. I don't think you've really committed to giving beer a try. Having a couple sips a couple times a year is not really trying it out.

So I've come to this final conclusion. (1) It is still somewhat mental. You might think you have gotten over the mental aspect, but the way you talk about beer in this thread, it is impossible for your bias not to get in the way when you taste beer. (2) Like someone who only tries anal sex a couple times a year, you have not given beer a real opportunity. (3) It's possible you just have a shitty palate.

Your friends are just drinking the wrong beer for you then. I used to think that all beers were bitter as well until I became friends with a bar owner and got to try lots of different beers. There are beers out there that are very smooth, some of them are even sweet, and not Purple Haze cough medicine sweet.

Because it could turn out to be something you love.

I hated beer and wine the first times I tried them. It actually took me a decent amount of time to like either one. Now I love both. And as sad as it is to say, I can't imagine my life without either one of them. I go to beer and wine dinners. I look forward each week to the new beer they will tap at my local beer exchange. There's nothing more enjoyable to me than having a good bottle of wine with an excellent dinner. I even have future plans to someday open up a wine bar (with several excellent beers on tap of course).

So if I were to have taken this attitude towards beer and wine:

Quote :
"why drink something you have to learn to like?"

Then my life would be less enjoyable than it is now.
