Quote : | "Economy - When he was first learning of the severity of the recession he told his wife to go to the ATM day after day taking out all the money it would allow b/c he was convinced that in a few days "if you put a plastic card in an ATM machine the last thing you were going to get was cash" which earned him the nickname Bank Run Burr. And, after his meeting with representatives from Goldman Sachs, who then gave the max allowed contribution to his campaign, he took a strong stand against Wall Street Reform. In fact Burr has gotten more money from out of state that in state for many years now, this year is no different. We know who he represents.
Environment - He tends to rate horribly here. According to Wikipedia: "Burr has generally received low ratings from environmental-protection organizations. In 2007-2008, for example, he received a rating of 0% from Environment America[17], 12% from the League of Conservation Voters, and 29% from Republicans for Environmental Protection." And he's taken plenty of cash from big oil like Haliburton, BP, and others which is reflected in his voting record.
Gay Rights - He's against repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell and favors an amendment to the US constitution to write in a ban of gay marriage which even his Libertarian opponent has called him out on for wasting government time/money on trying to rewrite the constitution with more of his social conservatism.
Obstructionist - Even with the military. In addition to participating in filibuster threats, he held up Duckworth's nomination to a key position in the office of veteran affairs despite her strong qualifications. He specifically also let generals travel from Korea and Hawaii to Washington DC for a meeting of the Senate Armed Services Committee and then canceled the meeting as a part of a larger party wide effort of obstructionism to not even let meetings happen. And his recent efforts have attempted to block unemployment relief and small business support efforts.
War - Burr says we still need several more years of war. Whereas Elaine has challenged President Obama on amount of conflict we're involved with.
Washington Incumbent - This one might not be a big deal to everyone, but I know for some people they don't like politicians who have been in Washington forever, and Burr has been in Washington for nearly 2 decades. But after nearly 2 decades it’s hard to name any big Burr accomplishments unless you want to count his attempt to make flag burning illegal?
Women's issues - He voted against Franken's anti-rape amendment which passed with many Dem & GOP votes. He also voted for domestic violence to continue as a pre-existing condition. He’s anti-choice and he voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act." |

Its on TV of course, and on their website here: http://www.wral.com/news/video/8435557/
NBC will have debates soon too, so you'll get another chance at watching a full debate live. There is still about half of this one left though.

Debate season continues:
http://wake.mync.com/site/Wake/news/story/55893/nbc-17-to-host-u.s.-senate-debate/
Quote : | "On Wednesday, October 13 we'll host all three candidates in the race for U.S. Senate. It's the only televised debate that includes incumbent Richard Burr and his two challengers Elaine Marshall and Mike Beitler." |
Next debate is tomorrow. Glad to see they are including everyone. Well more people anyways. The Green Party candidate Richard Weir still isn't there. I haven't heard much about his campaign, he seems to stand by the standard green party platform, but focus on education and ballot access issues. (although, honestly, this campaign seems to have a level of input somewhere between student body president, and county commissioner, rather than a strong statewide effort, so I kind of get why... on the other hand, how are parties supposed to grow strong enough if you don't give them a chance).

^Forgot to mention, it starts at 8 pm. I'll be finishing up a midterm at the time, so someone should post about how its going so I can catch up quick when I get back. Hopefully NPR will be broadcasting it too so I can catch part of it on the way home. I heard they did with the last debate, so maybe they will here too.
I'm glad NBC is letting the Libertarian guy play, even if the 2 WRAL debates aren't. 10/13/2010 4:16:55 PM |

Double post and all, but the ineptitude of politicians never ceases to amaze me. How can someone be work in government for 15+ years (or however long Marshall and Burr have been doing it) and have such a shaky grasp on the issues? Burr had this shit eating grin on his face the entire time - he seems like an all around dumbass, and he strikes me as insincere. Marshall said some things I liked, but on most of the questions, she was extremely vague. I want to hear some specifics. Of course, I liked Beitler, but he didn't adequately answer the question on rising insurance premiums or jobs, and he wrongly criticized Marshall for being pro-war, in a "guilty by association" kind of way.

Here's the debate in full (its divided into 3 parts). This had more back and forth than the first debate, and included more candidates. Definitely worth watching:

My midterm took the whole period, so I didn't watch debate until just now. I was watching out for the quote the whole time wondering who said it, and when it would come up. Poor Burr, and in his closing speech too.
I was impressed by Beitler more than I expected. He was more open to things in the realm of campaign finance reform, voter owned elections, fair elections now act, transparency/sunshine efforts, and the like as was Marshall. I don't know how much of that was from his libertarian ideals, and how much was from his being a 3rd party wanting to expose the special interest support of those in Washington, and of course voter owned elections can help open doors to 3rd party candidates who couldn't otherwise afford to compete against massive spending. I already knew Marshall was against DADT & DOMA (from reading her website), but I was happy to hear Beitler was against both of those as well, which I guess makes sense from a libertarian point of view. And I was happy with Beitler calling out Burr for only pretending to be a fiscal conservative. I was pleased that Marshall pointed out that she wasn't the Washington establishment choice in the the primary.
Overall I think more open debates and elections are definitely the right way to go.10/13/2010 11:37:35 PM |

http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/pdf/PPP_Release_NC_1019.pdf
Quote : | "Raleigh, N.C. – Following two debates and the airing of her first TV ads of the general election, PPP finds Democrat Elaine Marshall behind incumbent Republican Senator Richard Burr only 48-40, with Libertarian Michael Beitler’s share continuing to fall, now at only 3%. Burr was up 49-36-4 in the previous poll in late September.
Marshall has brought more Democrats who were undecided or had favored Burr back to the fold, now getting 73% of her party’s support, up from 65%, and even pulling a few more Republicans, at 6%, up from an almost nonexistent 1% last month." |
Quote : | "The main culprit for the tightening of the race is a closure in the enthusiasm gap that, while still favoring Republicans, is now only four points, versus nine, compared to the 2008 presidential vote." |
It also pointed out that Burr's job approval is negative and worsening, and Marshall's favorability is positive and growing, as is her name recognition. But the biggest news is obviously that the gap is tightening. And there are enough undecideds to make up that gap.
The Marshall camp still has more ads to air, there is a final televised debate in a few days, and I believe I heard that she picked up the News & Observer endorsement to which has to help.
Their last poll will be released somewhere in the Th 28th to Mon 1st range.

One of the last, if not the last, fundraising messages I expect to get from this campaign. Thought I'd pass it on since its nearly the last, and b/c its about the deciding factor in the race (can they buy a competitive amount of tv time).
Quote : | "Jake –
I just got an update from our fundraising department, and we are just $25,295 away from our $200,000 goal. It’s good timing, because Tuesday is the last day we can add to our ad buy for this week. Jake, we need your help to close this gap!
Chip in $5 or more before Tuesday to help us meet this urgent TV deadline:
http://elainemarshall.com/donate
Here’s what we know: when folks see our TV ad, our numbers improve dramatically and where we’ve been up more, we’ve seen the biggest improvement. The numbers are clear: if we have the resources to get out our message, we will win this race.
That’s where you come in – can you help us raise the final $25,295?
Contribute $5 or more here:
http://elainemarshall.com/donate
Let’s do this, and help Elaine Marshall win.
Thanks,
A.J. Carrillo, Deputy Campaign Manager Elaine Marshall for U.S. Senate" |

Quote : | "Elon Poll: Burr approval numbers low as election nears
With the 2010 congressional midterm elections less than a week away, only one third of respondents in the latest Elon University poll believed Republican U.S. Sen. Richard Burr deserves re-election as he fends off Democratic challenger Elaine Marshall.
The poll, conducted Oct. 24-27, 2010, surveyed 515 North Carolina residents and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points. The sample is of the population in general, with numbers that include both landlines and cellular phones. The Elon University Poll does not restrict respondents by voter eligibility or likelihood of voting.
Forty-five percent of residents think it is time for a new person to have a chance to fill the seat Burr holds, the poll found. However, respondents were evenly split when asked which party they plan to support in the Senate race, with both the Democrats and the Republicans each pulling 33 percent support from respondents. More than a quarter of poll respondents – 27 percent – have yet to decide which party to support." |
I'm not sure if that bold part is meant to suggest a tie? Seems odd that they ask Senate party instead of candidate by name (although, I do expect a large number of people vote by party). Not restricting it to likely voters maybe weakens it too (although there has been disagreement over what counts as a likely voter & how doing it wrong could introduce its own kind of bias).
I think PPP will be releasing a poll tomorrow or the 1st by the latest. They do restrict to likely voters. It should be more telling.10/30/2010 2:58:48 PM |

The elections results party for Elaine Marshall will be at the Brownstone Hotel, 1707 Hillsborough Street in Raleigh. Its not too far from the Bell Tower, just down the street towards down a short distance. A cash bar will be available.
Of course its free to get in, and open to the public. It starts at 7:30pm. Brad Miller should be making an appearance there too. 11/2/2010 6:50:05 AM |

He opposed it every step along the way, and voted against it in the only vote that mattered. He voted against repeal as a part of the Defense Bill (the same kind of bill it was born many years ago) back in September, and he voted against it on the cloture vote now as a stand alone bill. He was an enemy of DADT repeal and did nothing to help it pass. And even with his vote he still spoke about DADT repeal as if it was a bad thing.
Its like, after Obama won, McCain gave a call congratulating Obama on winning. You might say it was a respectable thing to do, but its a far cry from calling him an Obama supporter for doing something supportive after it had already been decided.
He will be remembered as a DADT repeal opponent to most of the people who wanted DADT repeal. 12/19/2010 12:43:24 AM |

Can we take a minute to recognize Senator Burr? I don't agree with a lot of his stances on issues, but at a minimum he has atleast conducted himself, as Chairman of the Sen. Intel. Cmte., like an adult that is interested in conducting oversight rather than partisan hysterics and obfuscation.
I know that's a low bar, but when you compare him to some of the other folks that are in a similar position, He has been a way better representative for his constituents. 1/24/2018 7:49:36 AM |
