Miami needs to repeat what's worked for it before. Hire a coach with previous head coaching experience.

Good
Jimmy Johnson - Coached at Oklahoma State. Won National Championship in 1987 and played for 2 others.
Dennis Erickson - Coached at Washington State. Won National Championships in 1989 and 1991 and played for one other.

Average
Butch Davis - No previous head coaching position. Loaded program. Somehow was unable to win National championship with 2000 team.
Larry Coker - No previous head coaching position. Only thing keeping him from being bad was winning national championship in 2001. Had he won the title in 2002 as well, he might still be there.

Bad
Randy Shannon - No previous head coaching position. Good recruiting, bad game day coach, bad developer of talent.

In summary, Miami needs to hire a coach that has been a head coach at the D 1 level before.
