haha herring? that's more definitive of Europe

12 layer cake? sugar cake? wtf are these things? arbitrary random churches bbq?

chili dog? I'm pretty sure that's not an NC thing. Maybe the carolina style burger with slaw, chili, and onions

fuck you, my own personal experience is the shared experience of the entire state.

Bojangles is based in NC. That should be enough to qualify.

^^well yes, it is- but until I came to nc state, no one raved about bojangles or held it any higher than any of the other places

that wasn't a personal attack- I personally like brueggers as my favorite place for breakfast that you can find in most towns- does that make it a taste of the carolinas since it is personal experience and can be a shared experience of the state?

^there are lots of restaurants that are located only in NC, and lots of products made here- is slim jim a taste of NC?

i don't believe it is.

and, FTR, "fuck you" is a term of endearment.

aight. i just looked it up: Slim Jims were invented and originally made in Philadelphia, before being sold to General Mills. GM moved the plant to Garner NC after it bought Jesse Jones sausage.

so "Slim Jim" is really just another Yankee carpetbagger.

But BoJos keepin it down home.

Bojangles may be based in NC but it isn't peculiar to it

they are all over SC, GA, etc.
shit there is even a Bojangles in Brooklyn! (it is fucking terrible but that is beside the point)

I don't think that a fast food chain should represent the culinary character of this state

anyhow, why would anyone ever consider Breuggers as a taste of NC? that's just dumb.

Breuggers: specialty: "New York Style" Bagels .... Headquartered in Vermont. First Store in New York. Locations now spread nationally from Canada to Florida, Massachusetts to California.

Bojangles: specialty: southern style chicken, biscuits, and fixins. Headquartered in Charlotte NC, First Store in Charlotte NC. eventually spread to other Southeastern states, with only a few outliers in Pennsylvania and Maryland. and contrary to a previous post, there are no Bojangles stores in New York.

I was just using breuggers as an example of something I like that is a chain that is something I go to all the time here in raleigh (that you can also find around the south east)

but whatever... silly argument because the point I was making is that I don't think a fast food place that you can find all over should be on there

but banana pudding souffle at some trendy little one-off cafe in Charlotte's gay district does?

or a BLT at some local grill in Chapel Hill?

these represent the taste of the entire state?

fuck, if anything represents the entire state, it's Bojangles and Krispy Kreme.

Joe I know you're just quoting a website but a Brueggers bagel ain't a NY style bagel. There's a reason you have a hard time finding one in the 5 boroughs...they suck. (sadly they're above average for what you can find in the South)

Yeah, i know. Breuggers is "NY Style" like Starbucks is gourmet coffee. people mistake a consistent product as being an authentic product. but it works for the majority of the population who don't know or care.

^^^^I didn't know Bryant Park and Wesley Heights was Charlotte's gay district?

Good that they got Merts and Price's Chicken Coop on there....some of the best soul food and fried chicken in the state definitely, especially Price's.

I'm sorry, Price's >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Bojangles and I love Bojangles.

Thanks.

Crook's Corner in Chapel Hill starts serving its honeysuckle sorbet tomorrow. I don't know about y'all, but I definitely plan to go check it out. The guy I spoke to last year said that the time for the desert is varied but limited each year, "It depends on the honeysuckle."

this list is terrible. it's a mix of ultra-specific items off of local menus and super-generic things like "apples"

Texas Pete was invented in Winston in the '20s.

If that doesn't define "Taste of NC" I don't know what does.

Bojangles was pretty popular among people I knew in Greensboro. It was the holy grail of senior lunches, reserved for special occasions.

While I'm sure there are better chicken joints in NC, none is so prevalent. Everyone in the state has eaten at Bojangles multiple times. Bubba's Chicken Shack out in bumfuck may be better, but nobody's heard of it. For that reason it deserves a place on the list. Or, if you can't agree to that, it's certainly more deserving then herring or sugar cake (which I've never heard of).

Also, I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest our take on Mexican food. You go north of here at all, shit's different (and shitty). You go south of here, it's different (maybe not as shitty. but still kind of shitty). From what I can tell we have our own variant of it and people who move from here consistently lament that they can't get it anymore.

though i enjoy it, our mexican is bland and without creativity

it's authentic to a segment of poor folks who can't get their hands on good ingredients

you go to texas or new mexico and the mexican is cheaper and a million times better/more interesting

Oh sure, I agree with all that. The point is that there is a certain taste to the Mexican food in NC. Others may be better, but this is undeniably ours.
