With IUDs, it's a valid question I can only assume it refers to things like initial placement, safe sex practices and...fuck if I know. I've always wondered that, when it came to IUDs


For things like the pill, it'd refer to taking it consistently, at the same time every day, not ingesting things that'll reduce effectiveness. Examples for the patch would include not being over the weight limit, applying to a proper location, and changing as scheduled.


Perfect/ideal/as prescribed vs real life usage.

I asked my doctor, about 10% of women have them taken out within 6 months. So that's a 10.8% failure rate. Fuck that, I'd rather get the permanent solution (essure or tubal ligation).

What exactly do those probabilities mean, btw? Probability of getting pregnant per sexual encounter with no other protective measures? Probability of getting pregnant per year? Per time that you would have gotten pregnant if it hadn't been in place? It's important to know exactly what you're reading, because if you're still getting it on like a fiend, you're significantly at risk under some interpretations but not others. Even 99% means you'll likely be getting pregnant at some point if you're having sex 4-5 times a week.

Actually, that's something a doctor probably should do in the case of any elective surgery, especially if it's purely cosmetic or very difficult to reverse.

It's ultimately the patients choice to get or not get the procedure done, but it's also the doctor's decision about whether or not they feel comfortable being the one to perform it.

My boy and I are coming up on 3 years; I've had the IUD for pretty much that entire time. We're talking about him getting fixed at 5 yrs, I can't wait! Although I'll probably be lazy and have the IUD left in until its expiration date in 2018, unless it causes complications.

I'd get myself fixed too, if I could find a doctor who would do it. I'm in nursing school for 2 more years, and don't want kids if I haven't had them by now. None of this getting pregnant at 40 crap.

i didn't read this thread, but i'd totally get a vasectomy if my wife and i didn't want kids...as it is right now, after we DO have kids, i'll get one...there's no reason for her to get her tubes tied when the old snip-snip is cheap, effective, and much more easily reversed should that ever be an issue (though ideally it wouldn't)

I gotta call BS on that. They still have the thread this thing up through your cervix and into the fallopian tube, and they have to do it twice. I have an IUD and that was NOT a pleasant experience. It wasn't horrible for me, but for some women it's much worse and a guy getting a vasectomy at least gets anesthesia.

Besides, when are men going to take birth control into their own hands? Its always the women getting on pills and shit. And you never hear a woman trying to convince a guy to NOT put a condom on.

maybe its not this way for all women, but when the pill actually regulated my period I got crazy acne. When I took a pill thats supposed to get rid of acne, my sex drive took a nose dive and my period would become irregular. no win.

I do. It's not uncommon for the hormones in BC to make some women crazier then normal, not such a useful side effect. Anyway, they use condoms when they need to scratch an itch but when they get into a relationship they go back on the pill. Relationship ends so does the BC.

^ I also got onto the pill about 6 years ago for the purpose of BC....I gained weight, got hormonal and felt tender. It also made me more sensitive to pain, I have no idea why. Getting off the damn pill and getting on the IUD was the best thing ever...I lost 20 pounds, got my pain tolerance back and same with my libido.

The string also went back to where it was supposed to recently, so no more worrying about that problem.

Oh, and Quagmire, if you're on an acne medication like Accutane, you HAVE to also be on birth control, else you'll get flipper babies, and I think even increased risk of miscarriage.

I had absolutely NO negative effects. I did the open-ended procedure by Dr. Charles Monteith in Raleigh (his website is great and very informative https://www.bestvasectomy.com/). I drove myself back home to Carrboro with my stick shift pickup truck after the procedure. I used the compression pants for one night and barely ever even used the frozen peas. Never used any pain meds. After the first night I was almost 95% of normal and even went out and did something less than 24 hours after the procedure. But I noticed no change in anything afterwards. It has been 5.5 years since I got mine done. I also only had to pay $100 back then and everything else was paid by insurance directly, but since then they have stopped submitting the insurance information and now you have to pay for it and then they help you submit for reimbursal.

8 years later, I'm still happy to have mine done.

Mine was scalpel free (he used scissors, haha) and tiny metal clamps.
The other procedure could cauterize the vas ends.

Every once in a while I can feel a clamp get caught on something inside my sac and gives me a .5 second sharp pain. This is maybe a couple times a year, and mostly my imagination determining what is happening.

I also did a whole bunch of shit the day of and over the weekend and completely ignored the rest recommendations, so it all may be my fault.

Everything is going great 11 days post-op.
The whole procedure took about 1.5 hours because the doctor's nurse quit on him a few days before and he seemed unorganized. The left side went well and quickly, but he said that I keep my boys close on the right side. Thus he had some grippy trouble on the right.
He was teh fun guy. He taped my member to my abdomen before cutting on me. According to him, he didn't want cut off my weiner accidentally. haha
He showed me the sections of the vas deferens that were cut out. They looked just like angel hair pasta as described. Post-surgical pain is like someone having a loose grip on your testicles. Nothing major. I used frozen peas for less than 2 days. I think all stitches will be dissolved in another few days.

4 stitches per testicle, IIRC. I jokingly told the doc not to jack up the folds in my scrotum while sewing me up. He basically said that he didn't care because not many people will see the underside of my nuts.
I had my first post-surgery nut today. I was super anxious and kept thinking it would feel like blue balls, but everything went better than expected.

I had mine done with Monteith about 5 years ago as well. Highly recommend for anyone looking to have the procedure. Drove myself there and home. Was in the building a total of 15 minutes. 2 days later started the process of cleaning out the swimmers. Never any pain or issues. 12/10, would recommend to a friend.
