I've known Supplanter for years. He's a homosexual. So what?
He's a great guy, very active in the community, very knowledgeable, and committed to his causes. He also is one of the nicest, most understanding, and mature people you will ever meet. He's leagues ahead of most of you pieces of shit.] 9/26/2010 6:22:10 PM |

I think you might be surprised at non-hostile NC is.
Here is an event list I got in an e-mail:
Quote : | "# NC PrideFest 2010, Durham, Sep 25, 2010 # Blue Ridge Pride, Asheville, Oct 02, 2010 # PRIDE Charlotte, Charlotte, Oct 02, 2010 # Catawba Valley Pride, Hickory, Oct 16, 2010 # LGBT Issues and the Importance of Getting Out the LGBT Vote, Wilmington, Oct 16, 2010 # 2010 Equality Conference and Gala, Greensboro, Nov 13, 2010" |
And here is an event from a while back in Raleigh
That was a very easy list of 7 places to put together. But any large town/mid sized city is fine too like Winston of Fayetteville or High Point or Asheboro or Gastonia. Every town that has a college in it which picks up places like Boone and Greenville. Almost any town along the coast. Anywhere in or around the triangle, Cary, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Hillsborough, Morrisville etc. Granted a lot of these places don't make as much sense for a state wide rally b/c some are smaller population centers and they aren't as centrally located in the state. They make okay places for local or college LGBT groups to have events though. Although when prop 8 passed there were rallies across the country & across NC, and there were like 20 different locations for rallies in NC that weekend. There are some places in the south where I might feel uncomfortable attending such a rally, North Carolina is not one of those places.
While this event has been held in Durham most often, they've actually held the main annual Pride event in a few different over the years, 7 different towns to be exact. Here is a shot from Pride back in '81. By that time NC already had openly gay elected officials. We were the first state in the south to do so. We are also the only southern state without an anti-gay marriage amendment to our constitution.

I seem to get that once or twice every few years on tdub. Less so recently tho. But no worries, you aren't the first to say that on tdub.

^Not sure. Just did a little googling and came across this
http://www.heraldsun.com/view/full_story/9665950/article-IT-S-A-MATTER-OF-PRIDE?instance=homefifthleft
Quote : | "DURHAM -- The 26th annual N.C. Pride Parade & Festival went off Saturday without any apparent hitch, drawing by police estimate about 2,000 marchers and an untold number of spectators to the Ninth Street area.
Now firmly a part of the Durham scene, the gay rights parade has spawned spinoff events in cities across the region, from Greensboro to Raleigh." |
There were, it seemed to me, there were many more spectators than marchers. So maybe somewhere between 3 to 5 thousand people total if you count spectators & people who turned out for the grounds/tent/speeches stuff before hand too (not accounting the simultaneous events in other cities that may have drawn some ppl away). By way of comparison, that Raleigh pic I posted in my last post had about 1.4 to 1.6 k ppl depending on who you ask, so this was definitely a big event by rally standards.9/26/2010 7:20:47 PM |

^^That's an interesting question to ask; AFAIK it consists of a red stripe and a blue stripe below it, and one day I made a re-color of the American flag based on what the DeviantArtist whose image I used in the OP of the "LGBTQA ITT" thread said...

Yeah, I noticed that too. Seems to have a few less colors though (most of the time) than most gay rainbow symbols which can help for telling them apart.
It seems as though the multicolor nature of both symbols are references to diversity.

Quote : | "Incidentally, if anyone here does wear rainbow infinity-symbols, they may want to be aware of the symbol's similarity to the rainbow ribbon worn by people supporting sexual diversity--gay, lesbian, etc. ... After all, there's no use in a symbol if people don't know what it means; and this is a very new symbol." |
This discussion, from 2007, references an autism infinity symbol (which I wasn't previously familiar with) and concern that going to rainbowy with autism symbols might lead to confusion. Nevertheless its a good cause, so no harm in sharing.

Not sure. I haven't heard anything yet. But these are the kinds of places I'd check for something happening in Raleigh (other than bar/club events. LGBT groups websites in Durham & Chapel Hill might also worth checking into):
http://lgbtcenterofraleigh.com/ They seem to list an event called Raleigh is Coming Out, but its happening a little after National Coming Out Day.
http://equalitync.org/events/previous/atct_topic_view?b_start:int=0&-C= Equality NC lists a lot of events around the state, but I don't see anything up for that far ahead yet, maybe they'll put up something. Or signing up for their e-mail listserv might be helpful for notices.
http://www.trianglelocalevents.com/?page=subscribe They list local events for almost every day of the week year round. If an event is posted anywhere, they'll probably hear about it and e-mail about it. But their last e-mail didn't go out as far as Oct yet.
http://www.ncsu.edu/stud_affairs/glbt/aegis/index.php http://www.ncsu.edu/student_affairs/glbt/ They send out e-mails like once a week during the year. And they have a weekly meeting on campus, so they may do something. 9/27/2010 12:07:08 AM |

Having NC Pride separate from the national late June time frame gets it a little more local press coverage than I think it would if it was just a part of a national event. Also, people who want to travel to a bigger national events can still attend this one since it is so separate. Local elected officials may be more inclined to attend this close to an election. Granted I've only been a few times, but there have been campaigns there each time. I don't know if temp or weather considerations go into it at all, but I assume less ppl are away on vacation at the end of sept than in the middle of the summer, & more triangle college students are certainly in the triangle at that time. Mostly though, I imagine it is just tradition. That's the time NC has held it for years, so they keep doing it that way.

There's an event, but not very triangle adjacent.
http://dukechronicle.com/article/campus-celebrates-national-coming-out-day
Looks like they had an event at Duke last year, so probably this year again.
http://goqnotes.com/3906/winston-salem-celebrates-coming-out-day/ PLAG event in Winston last year. PFLAG websites around the state might be worth checking if you're looking for a coming out day event.
Another place to keep your eyes on is NC's main LGBT newspaper, Q-Notes. They may run a story on events once it gets a little closer: http://goqnotes.com/9/27/2010 12:40:42 AM |

It was very interesting to see the different colleges in the triangle represented in this parade.
About NCSU-yeah its a shocker for the red-necks and southern folks to realize there are actually gay/bi folks here at State
About NCCU-dude there are SOO many downlow dudes at Central, its ridiculous, yet you see 3 blk chicks in the parade
** but regardless of all of that, im glad to see folks were out having a good time and enjoying themselves, minus the creepy homeless dude in that pic who was acting a little too desperate!** 9/27/2010 3:05:49 AM |
