^how painful will it be and how much work will he have to take off?

If they're fixing his septum, he'll probably be in some pain afterwards, though if he's just getting the removal his nose will probably be sensitive (and dear god don't touch it), but there won't be much other pain. He'll probably wind up with painkillers too, just in case.

As far as time off work, keep in mind that he'll have a slingshot bandage across his face (connects to the ears, and pulls a piece of gauze up to the nose). It's not pleasant and there's a ton of blood, so while he may be physically capable of working, it's probably for the best he doesn't do a ton over that first week. Have a bunch of gauze on hand too, as you'll run through it quickly.

Pro-tip: make sure to put some lotion/vaseline on the back of your ears (like where your glasses sit) because otherwise that sling starts to get pretty uncomfortable.

Yeah my dad took a week off of work since he looked like he had been in a fist fight with that sling on his face He basically just sat in bed and did (legal) drugs for that week lol.

I had the deviated septum surgery done a while back, and its no fun. Basically, bored it out, and then stuck tampons up your nose for a few days. (Stitched in afterwords, to prevent them from falling out.) I think mine were in for about 3 days, and when I went to have them removed, they yanked them out and tons of blood followed. It was no fun, and if you think you are a mouth breather now, you'll definitely be while recovering.

And what Stein said is pretty accurate. you pretty much sit for a week and take legal drugs.

Also, I pretty much still found blood coming up 6 months + after the surgery. Not sure why, but I've heard that's pretty common.

I'm having this surgery done at the end of the month for the second time. The first time, I also had my wisdom teeth taken out at the same time, so I was in hell for the next two weeks. But I hope it won't be as bad this time, considering that I have to teach a week later.

Hey qntmfred, how did your surgery go?

I just had mine yesterday, so I'm all jacked up on painkillers, hanging out with gauze on my schnoz. Great excuse to take the rest of the week off from work.

i was originally gonna get it done on like march 10, but my sister got married on march 20 and she kept dropping hints that she was concerned i'd look like a domestic abuse victim in her wedding photos, so i volunteered to postpone it. so now it's at the end of april

somehow, this has managed to be the best allergy season i've had in years though so i guess i lucked out

this is probably one of those things where you have a problem all your life then smoke your first blunt and it's cured and your life gets ruined in short order

Hookworms are the solution to your problems. Go to Tijuana and walk around barefoot in some shit. Human shit. The kind that has parasitic hookworm eggs. Then you play the waiting game as those hookworms burrow into your intestines.

You'll feel better in a month or so.

mine looked something like this

if i remember correctly, black = clear sinuses, grey = stuff

i had a lot of stuff in mine. i asked him on a scale of 1-10 how bad it was he said it was like an 8. i also had a noticeably deviated septum

i go in for surgery on wednesday. for those of you who have had this, what should i expect for recovery as far as trying to get some work done? will i be able to sit in a chair for hours at a time, or should i pretty much expect to lay in bed and work through my netflix queue for the next week?

You'll be able to sit in a chair for hours at a time, but you probably won't be able to focus for that long. I would plan to take at least three days off afterwards, because you'll mostly be tired as hell. The general anesthesia takes it out of you, and it'll be difficult to breathe with plastic stints in your nose; you'll also have to sleep inclined on a giant mound of cushions and pillows, so your sleep won't be great either. All that adds up to being pretty unproductive during the day.

well M. Quantum Frederick, I can't relate exactly to the process you're about to go through

but when I had my sinus-related surgery in 09, I couldn't sit for more than an hour or so at a time. Mine was also eye-related, so it hurt to look at anything, so that may be why. That being said, you are probably going to drain a fuckton of fluid. I did. It was not nice at all.

That video that evan posted is pretty interesting, I thought. Seeing those polyps and other junk getting shaved and sucked away is crazy. Also, the thick nasty inspissated mucus... wow

Good luck on your surgery, Ken.

I am wondering if he will be a mouth breather. He is def breathing a lot better but he is still draining stuff.

I also came into this thread to watch the video evan posted. So cool.

it's been one year since my surgery. still breathing much better, but i have to do a fair amount of routine "maintenance" on my nostrils to keep things well ventilated

I think Aaron needs this. He does breathe through his nose most of the time anyway, but I think that's because he's stubborn.
