i think you only got to that part and stopped reading my posts
but ok! clearly i was oversimplifying, as i stated before, just to point out the prevalence of back alley abortions, which sometimes people don't think about. if a woman doesn't want to be pregnant, she will find a way not to be.
but i'll keep going with your argument.
people are going to smoke pot whether or not it is illegal, might as well make it legal.
ZOMG good point!

no law is going to be a perfect solution to a problem
the best policy, in my opinion, is one of harm reduction
acknowledge that there will be bad things happening but seek to minimize the negative impact on the maximum number of people

what I don't understand is how some people who are prolife utilize PGD to "balance their family" and select specifically for male vs female...

I KNOW! do you have to take ethics type classes in your genetic counseling program? i'm assuming yes. i bet those are interesting topics and interesting class discussions. i really liked ethics in undergrad. 9/28/2010 7:52:54 PM |

Definitely.. and we have already talked about PGD, particularly dealing with this one doctor's clinic in California. He will advertise in India through Google saying he does PGD and pretty much seek out rich Indian families who specifically want a boy. :\ It's just hard because on one hand we're supposed to take a nondirective approach but on the other hand I can't help but think of how messed up sex selection is.
Please note: I'm not calling out Indian people because I certainly understand there's a whole cultural aspect to that, and there are also a ton of rich white people going to him for specific things like sex, eye color, hair color, etc... I do think it's funny how that doctor said he doesn't really seek out people with certain cultural backgrounds though - and yet he advertises specifically in a country where it's viewed as better to have a male than a female.
Oh and I still haven't decided what I'm going to do if a family comes to me who wants to "balance their family" and have a karyotype done for the baby.. I still have a while to figure it out though

Advocating is a pretty strong word. I don't think I really know anyone who fits that description.

Come on, those are 3 different things.

Smoking pot is largely victimless. Killing babies is not.9/29/2010 12:51:25 AM |
