In my experience this is not the case. Most of the time girls are in pairs, or in four or more.
(the reason you don't see 3 has been explained .... Leaving one out if two decide to pair off)
But I can think of more cases where the groups are either 2 or more than 4.... ( like 5 or 6).

I think this may be a case of confirmation bias, or I have weird anecdotal evidence

I took a power walk with three other gfs on Saturday. It was nice because we could walk 2 up and 2 back and enjoy a variety of conversation topics.
