so per this thread and as everyone agrees upon, the only way you can catch the snitch and lose is if you give up or if you're not paying attention
either way that makes it a flawed game

Besides, Luke took one out with just a lightsaber and a grenade and he wasn't even a jedi yet. It seems like they could just give every yokel a grenade and lightsaber and take out the AT-ATs.
As much as they praise General Veers for winning the Battle of Hoth, it's surprising the poor planning that went into, even after the blunder made by Admiral Ozzel. 10/13/2010 7:24:02 PM |

^But Admiral Ozzel felt that surprise was wiser... who knew the rebels would have a shield strong enough to deflect any bombardment. They should have used one of those on Alderaan if it could deflect anything.

I don't think that's true. Vader executed Ozzel because he came out of hyperspace too soon, ruining the element of surprise and allowing the rebels to raise their shield. I'd assume that due to the ubiquitous nature of shields in the Star Wars universe that most military planners would treat any installation like it had a shield, especially after the loss of the first Death Star.
Though I digress; this discussion is about tactical errors during the Battle of Hoth, not larger strategic errors during the greater Galactic Rebellion.] 10/13/2010 11:57:04 PM |

Alderaan had shields able to withstand just about any fleet bombardment, but nothing that could stand up to the Death Star.
That's one of the few tactical advantages of the Death Star (mostly it was a terror weapon). It was the ultimate siege breaker.10/14/2010 1:43:58 AM |

^^^^I still agree with Admiral Ozzel. At the time the probe droid discovered the rebels on Hoth, the snowspeeders weren't even working yet, hence why they couldn't go flying around to find Luke right away. Even with the shields up, with no snowspeeders, the AT-ATs could have gotten into the base much faster and caught more of the fleet. Admiral Ozzel just had bad luck, in this alternate scenario he would have been a genius for coming out of hyperspace right next to Hoth instead of approaching slowly and silently.

So on the quidditch discussion... I've only seen each Harry Potter film once so I never really understood how the game is played.
So they've got the three rings and if they get the ball through the hoops they get some points... that's cool I understand that. But the entire time the game is being played Harry is going after the snitch... once he (or I guess the other team) catches it, his team gets 150 points and the game is over. So what's the point of throwing the balls through the holes? It always takes people like 5 mins to catch the snitch and by then the rest of the team has scored like 8 points.
Why even bother trying to score through the hoops... why not just focus on getting the snitch? And if the games only ever last 5 mins why is it supposedly so exciting? 10/14/2010 8:58:26 AM |

In the book I think I remember them talking about some matches lasting more than a day but they don't say how often this happens. I guess the players are all sitting down the whole time anyway so its not like they'd get tired that fast. 10/14/2010 9:02:33 AM |
AndyMac All American 31922 Posts user info edit post |
I think the games are supposed to be longer than 5 minutes, they just don't have time to put a full length sports event in the middle of a movie.
Kind of like how the final game of The Waterboy is like 15 minutes instead of a couple hours (and all the other games are like 2 minutes). 10/14/2010 9:10:49 AM |

^^^ read the wikipedia, it's (not surprising) extremely nerdy and informative
the balls through the hoops are worth 15 points each. still doesn't change the fact that you could have a shit team and an awesome seeker and win the majority of games 10/14/2010 9:14:04 AM |

^Well the difference is that in sports movie, the games actually appear to be a few hours long. It has different cuts edited to it and it shows different plays, people scoring, the final score, etc. In the Harry Potter movies, it usually just follows him for a few mins and prior to him catching the snitch, each side has scored like twice. From the pace of the game, it looks like they should be scoring as much as you would in basketball.
So is catching the snitch the only way to end the game? 10/14/2010 9:17:12 AM |
Toby_dog Veteran 164 Posts user info edit post |
Yea, the way they film it, it feels like you're following Harry's experience of the game in real-time. They cut away to someone scoring through the hoops and then cut back to Harry exactly where he was when we cut away. I guess the filmmakers don't "get" sports either. 10/14/2010 9:24:50 AM |
