I was never given any orders. The bar closed, I was told to go outside and I did. Outside is this massive crowd of dancing halloween people. I walk over to the crowd and started taking pics and video and then I got gassed. When A cop did come up to me, he told me to leave, then his horse stepped on me so I fucking left. Not really sure how I lied about anything?

And actually it was like I claim and there are numerous pics and videos to document it. It was no different than the halloween deal in Chapel Hill. Just a bunch of people dancing and being stupid in the street. I understand its illegal to dance in a street and block traffic, but is shooting teargas into a crowd of unarmed/ non-violent people proper protocol in this case? I don't think it is. I'm not saying cops are bad people, I'm glad for their service and realize they play an important role in our society. BUT, in my opinion they handled this case the wrong way. Wilmington has a terrible track record of overzealous cops who abuse their status. This event will just further that reputation.

1. I said the crowd was the same as chapel hill. Where as it's a mass of young people dancing and walking through the street. The crowd is generally good hearted people just looking for a good time and not out to cause harm. Occasionally there may be an isolated problem, but it can be dealt with on an individual basis. This was not town-sponsored, unlike chapel hill. I agree with you.

2. No one was running into traffic. Front street is shut down at 2am every weekend b/c of the mass influx of drunk people from the bars. Therefore there was no traffic to be blocked.

3. I didn't run toward the crowd. I stepped out of the bar when it closed and the crowd was all around me. All the bars in Wilm are pretty centralized so you automatically get a huge mass of people after closing time.

4. Maybe the cops told some people to go home. It appears they did after hearing at least one others account. So they tell like 5 kids out of several hundred to leave and then gas the whole crowd anyways?

Again, my beef is not the cops, or the fact that they had to break up the crowd. It's the fact that they just gassed several thousand people in a city block because some of them were dancing in the street.

Everybody was just dancing around or standing and watching and the next thing we were all choking and burning. No warning no nothing, just gas grenades fired at us. Like I said, when a cop finally came up and told me to beat it, I was fucking out of there in a hurry. I don't want trouble.

I'm glad it wasn't bullets too, but I don't like any type of projectile to be fired at me by cops without warning or reason. As far as I know of, no one was hurt. But they could have been due to the mass panic and confusion caused by the police.

My problem is the way in which they handled the situation. The police already had the road closed and barricaded in preparation of a mass of drunk people leaving the bar on halloween night. They knew what they'd be dealing with. You think they would have had officers lined along the street (like chapel hill) or at least some cop cars in the streets with megaphones telling people to go home. Instead they allowed a problem to form and instead of dealing with it civilly they launch tear gas down the streets of Wilmington

North Carolina law says 2am. In an old historic town like Wilmington and a little 2 lane brick street ,such as Front St, the area simply became overwhelmed with people.

There was already plenty of cops present. They just like to stand in groups on the corners or in alleys. It's like this every weekend. Had they been dispersed among the area, they could have begun to round up people and move them along or begun handcuffing the non-compliants. Instead the police stood in a large group at the other end of the road and somehow expected the entire crowd to hear their demands.

Also, if you were a citizen of New Hanover County you would realize that a vast majority of the income in this area comes from drunk tourists and students.
