You'd never survive if you didn't serve any sort of food. I'm not even sure you can get a liquor license without selling food in NC.

Tons of places in Charlotte don't serve food

They let you get delivery from other places

until there is a lot more housing that's walking distance from hillsborough street, there's very few additional establishments that would economically viable on hillsborough st.

most of the population that lives within walking distance of hillsborough are dormrats that are, by and large, under 21. There are a relatively handful of over 21 students and young professionals that live in the various houses behind hillsborough street that keep the existing joints in business, but the bulk of over 21 students live in cheap hamster housing apartment complexes to the south of campus, which require driving to hillsborough street.

Downtown is just more convenient in terms of ease of parking and variety of bars.

^^^ I'm pretty sure you can.

^That's what I'm saying. You have to go after a large portion of the on-campus crowd. People will show up on the weekends, but you can't turn a profit running 3-4 days a week.

you can if you are a private club, I think

serving food is a big pain in the ass because you'd need a kitchen and kitchen staff

I'd allow people to bring in their own food and I'd have take-out menus from nearby restaurants that can deliver - maybe I'd even be able to cut a deal with them

^^ you're right on the money with that
downtown would probably be a better choice - H'boro Street seems like a money pit

What about a place that specializes in cereal? It would get great business from morning students, and hipsters eat cereal 24/7. Imagine the possibilities.

I don't like chain restaurants very much, but that might work....

Yes. There are NO pizza places on Hillsborough.

"beer bar and classic/retro arcade"

...add a laundromat and you've got it.

I've always wondered where in the US would be best to open a nerd bar.
Nerds are often either...
liberal health-snob nanny-state supporters that hate booze and smoking,
or conservative tee-totaling drug-prohibition supporters that hate booze and smoking.

But where's the bar for us drug nerds?
We like booze and smoking, as well as chess, magic cards, sci-fi, etc.
Where can we go to play a nerd game, talk about nuclear physics, and enjoy a beer or hookah?

Why not go full out and have a diner owned by a Greek on Hillsborough? Have it open 24 hours during exams weeks.

I miss Greek diners

I would open an apartment building with commercial space on the first floor.

Hillsborough street needs more pedestrian traffic to support more businesses.

i know there is one high density housing project being worked on in the land behind pantana bobs. I don't know any details, but that's definitely a step in the right direction.
