^^ Mac Office 08 just has HORRIBLE memory management. It simply is not capable of handling large documents or a lot of data. It's literally like night and day with Office 07/'10 and Office 08 (I haven't used '11 yet).

my mac word rarely crashes. it has only crashed a few times. but i'm a control freak about saving. i save as a reflex though while i'm typing.

Mine is just too large to save frequently on my machine (saving a 30MB word file on a machine with only 2GB of ram), that I lose productivity if I save as frequently as I need too. But I guess it's that, or continue to re-type things that I lose when it shuts down. I find it works better in a .doc file (which makes a larger file), than a compressed .docx.

yea i always save in .doc

but it makes your computer go slow when you save? that is weird. do you have a macbook? i've just never had issues, even with large files. i guess got lucky...knock on wood!

i had a couple of scares in school but luckily the auto recovery saved me.

Yup--I have the first ever Macbook, so it's a bit dated. It's not that it makes the computer run slowly, it's that it takes it a long time to save, and any time I copy/paste, or do any reformatting, it has to "Repaginate" all 1300 pages. So, in all, maybe 35-40 seconds every time I want to save.
