sushi isn't a fad
just because something is currently popular doesn't mean it's going to go out of fashion next week. i've eaten sushi since i was a little kid. if you like fish and fresh ingredients, what's not to like? it will always be popular among people with refined tastes. those who dislike it probably eat fast food several times a week 11/21/2010 11:26:42 PM |

that's a pretty big stretch..
so, because someone doesn't like raw fish = that person hates all fresh food = that person eats fast food several times a week? 11/21/2010 11:29:45 PM |

no
I cook
a lot
I use a lot of fresh ingredients while cooking as well.
I do eat raw food substances often though. Just not flesh. 11/21/2010 11:32:37 PM |

^^This whole thread is really just you not liking sushi and goddamnit why am I not taking my own troll advice.
Especially since the "fad" for sushi was actually in 90s when it exploded across the country. Now it's just another form of food like anything else, and typically people like it because they genuinely enjoy it.
If you genuinely enjoy food and cooking you should be able to respect that, even if you inexplicably "hate" sushi.

you must not like fish then
to me, albacore and ahi taste better than fillet mignon. it's a texture/flavor thing that's difficult to explain. you either appreciate it or you don't i guess. kinda like red wine or caviar. it's an acquired taste that isn't for everyone.
i haven't met a lot of people who love fresh produce and seafood that think sushi is gross. in my experience, people that dislike sushi are the type of people that eat at applebee's or chilli's.
just sayin'

false. And I'm not even going to go into the 'yo momma's snatch...' joke... because that tasted decent, considering...
Is it so hard to imagine that heat/fire brings out a taste in food that I enjoy? There was this caveman once.... his name was Burton.... he discovered fire so that he wouldn't have to bite into raw fish anymore, and so that he could warm his genitals on cool autumn nights. Some might call him an asshole, but I happen to think that he was a visionary.]11/21/2010 11:42:23 PM |

LOL! Give me a fucking break. Sushi is hardly for people with "refined" tastes. It's for people who fucking like it. People who refer to it as special, or for "certain" people who enjoy "higher quality" things is what only adds to EMCE's claim that it's a "fad."11/22/2010 12:17:12 AM |
Netstorm All American 7547 Posts user info edit post |
^It is a special type of food preparation, but I agree that anyone can enjoy it--it takes no special qualification or interest. It's not "hip", and it's not only liked by a small amount of people. People (like EMCE) just like to attribute it to fad or snobbery because by nature it's a more expensive cuisine and has a lot of discrimination in quality (because it's the inherent nature of the food). 11/22/2010 12:20:49 AM |

yea i'm more partial to the kind your friend says is sushi
but i'm coming around to rolls. i've had a few that were totally tasty. but some i still think are icky. not cause of the fish. i <3 fish. but i don't care for all the mayo-y goo that sometimes is in them
and i've always wondered about those baby octopus (octopii??) lol.
i ate some whack stuff in asia...i don't even remember all of it. i didn't go to japan though so i didn't get sushi, but i did eat tons of seafood.

^^They do have rolls, but it's predominantly a Western concept of sushi. Japanese sushi is far more sashimi focused, and nigiri takes second place.
I mean it doesn't take an anthropologist to look at the "Specialty Roll" list at a sushi joint and come to the realization that most of it is Western. 11/22/2010 12:52:48 AM |

I'm not a big fan of nigiri sushi or sashimi. It don't got no taste besides the soy sauce.
But I'm all over that maki!!!
And I don't think sushi is currently a fad. John Hughes had a girl bringing sushi to school for lunch in 1985 (Breakfast Club, y'all!)... 11/22/2010 1:15:51 AM |

I started eating sushi because a half-japanese friend nagged me into it. I kept eating it because that shit turned out to be fucking delicious. If you can't appreciate the taste of fish then on your head be it, but I get a great deal of joy out of detecting the subtle differences in flavor and texture of different kinds of fish and seafood.
And I look down on people who load up on wasabi and/or soy sauce, thereby masking the taste.
I will admit to indulging in the occasional western bastardized roll, but for the most part I favor nigiri or sashimi. 11/22/2010 1:28:06 AM |

^If you're still in Raleigh, try out Sono. When it comes to sashimi and nigiri, their quality of fish and the cuts they use are so great that you'll never be tempted to get a "bastardized Western" option. 11/22/2010 1:31:30 AM |
ncsuallday Sink the Flagship 9818 Posts user info edit post |
Tokyo House and Waraji are also very good. In the "best sushi in Raleigh" thread people complained about the sashimi at Sono but I've never had a bad experience there personally 11/22/2010 1:33:06 AM |
GrumpyGOP yovo yovo bonsoir 18195 Posts user info edit post |
Haha, the "bastardized western" is, as far as I'm concerned, a different category of food -- I manage to enjoy authentic latin american food and cueva de lobos at the same time, or legitimate variations on Chinese food and Pearl on Avent Ferry. Same deal with straight up sashimi and nigiri being delicious as well as, but differently from a spicy tuna or shrimp tempura roll. They're all good, but I can recognize that one is more authentic than the other.
[Edited on November 22, 2010 at 1:35 AM. Reason : I will try sono if/when I can afford it, however.] 11/22/2010 1:34:47 AM |

^^I meant that arrow to point to Grumpy's ass but whatever.
I was a combatant in the "best sushi in raleigh" thread. Most of the hate at Sono was eventually conceded to be just competitive angst because they loved Waraji.
^Yeah, I agree, but the second you start talking about "sushi grading" or how low-quality fish tastes bad, people are all up in arms about it being elitist and a fad. Christ, it's not about snobbery, it's a qualification of sushi to be high quality because that's the nature of it to begin with. 11/22/2010 1:36:50 AM |
GrumpyGOP yovo yovo bonsoir 18195 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah, with sushi I don't care who you are, it is in your best interest to pay at least some attention to the quality. A shitty piece of raw fish certainly comes across as more dangerous than a shitty piece of cooked beef, for example. 11/22/2010 1:43:13 AM |
Netstorm All American 7547 Posts user info edit post |
^So many people I've met (like EMCE) that claim to hate sushi have never had good sushi, usually Harris Teeter quality stuff that's not really going to give you an accurate glimpse into sushi--like saying you hate Mexican food because you don't like Taco Bell. 11/22/2010 1:49:04 AM |

Yup. I'm unable to detect taste (and even texture to a lesser extent) in plain, raw fish. Perhaps it's because I'm a very heavy smoker.
But add in some crunchy cucumber, some salty seaweed, some spicy mayo, and now we're talking...

You're right. If you can't eat plain ground beef, you shouldn't like cheeseburgers. If you don't like plain chicken, then you must not like cajun fried chicken. If you don't like plain lettuce, you should avoid salads. If you don't like turkey, then don't even bother with the turkey, stuffing, and gravy this Thanksgiving.
I can go on like this forever... 11/22/2010 2:34:23 AM |

Actually all of your points were pretty spot on.
However, your critically deceptive metaphor isn't really appropriate for a type of food preparation that very closely centers on the straightforward and subtle taste of plain raw fish.
Granted, you did say you just like rolls, so there's not really a point of contention and now I'm just arguing to be arguing.

OMG! It is sooo popular, nothing popular can be a fad! In the mid 90s when everyone drove SUVs because they were rugged, it was because they all needed to cross 30 miles of desert and cut a path through old growth forest just to get groceries every night.
f'n please.
I you like sushi, good on you. I like pan seared tuna steak with a raw middle and that is about as close as I'll get this side of starvation. But my biggest impediment to choking down raw fish isn't the food, it is the pretentious cock-bags who sit around pretending to be au courant. 11/22/2010 6:12:39 AM |
