obsolete sounds like too harsh of a word. as long as there is legal stuff/whatever gay folks are denied bc they can't get married, it can't be obsolete, imo.

Quote :
"There is a safety and confidence in knowing you've agreed to "til death do us part".

And I'm not religious at all. I know I got married for no religious married reasons but also it was more than just the legal benefits."

i agree with this.

This may sound odd, but I honestly think it simply looks good to get married in terms of career prospects. You seem more mature and responsible. It SHOULDN'T be that way, but by and large I think it is?

Also, what was that quote from The Departed? Something like "Marriage is important to get ahead; lets people know you aren't a homo and that your dick works."

[Edited on November 27, 2010 at 9:25 AM. Reason : and I definitely want the cliche married life with kids... whatever.]

Marriage isn't just obsolete, monogamy is. The sooner we realize our social/sexual norms are here to serve us (and not the other way around), the sooner we'll be able to revise them in ways that give everybody more liberty, happiness, fulfillment, etc.

Until then we'll remain slaves to past necessity.

marriage is a normal stage of life. It like a degree or a first home. If your not married or at least engaged by 27, you fail at life. Anyone who disagrees is lying to themselves.

I wish people would just do whatever makes them happy. If you want to get married do it, if you want to be married AND fuck other people, do it as long as y'all in agreement, if you want to fuck whomever, whenever, then just dooooooooooooo it. And let the gays do it too for fucks sake.

my .02.

i have been in a monogamous relationship for a while and about to get married.
i don't really have an issue with monogamy, and it doesnt really effect me that much if i "can't" have sex with the cute guy in my class.

i don't know...its just that the idea of polygamy is not that attractive to me. at all.

i actually talked to cody about this once (youre probably not gonna believe this...) we were watchign a law and order where one man had three or four wives. and after thinking about it, i really didnt see the big deal. hell if cody wanted to i probably wouldn't see the big deal either, as long as i could get along with the other girls

however i do NOT want 3 or more husbands/boyfriends what ever

Sorry MCDanger, all my ideas are mine. I don't have a dirty, hipster cuntface manual to read off as a bible.

When are you getting married?

Then fine. You've thought about it and this is your conclusion. I'm not saying people shouldn't choose monogamy if this is what truly makes them happy. People whose natural inclinations stem away from monogamy, however, are in a position where they're meant to feel alien, odd, different, or worse, WRONG. This is the only thing I'm pointing out; if we progressed to a point of examining our own norms with awareness, then more folks could opt into levels that made them feel comfortable.

It's called a brain, not a "hipster cuntface manual". You should try developing one and reading thoughts off of it, it's a lot more effective than repeating what your retarded fucking family members force fed you.

Wow. Must be a nice view from that ivory tower, huh

Marriage isn't for everyone. 60% of divorces fail in this country and a lot of people would be better off never getting married in the first place

haha yeah, mine anyways. I'm basically saying do whatever makes you happiest. It doesn't affect me!

Buuuuuuuuut on the same hand, I couldn't let my bf have other girlfriends unless I had boyfriends too. Why does he get to have all the fun? lol

I can understand that, but I think that this attitude stems from treating all sexual encounters as essentially the same. This is an attitude I see reflected all over the place.

Why do all sexual encounters have to be for the same reason? I think most marriages would benefit a great deal from a "take a week off" policy here and there. Sex with another person doesn't have to be the same as sex with your wife/husband/horse, because it doesn't have to be for the same reasons. It seems strange that because you sleep with your trusted life partner (because of love/connection/attachment/whatever), that ANY instance of sex would be the same (getting your jollies), and that sex should be monopolized by the relationship you construct a family from.

Nowadays sex can be without material consequences. Some thought needs to be given about how to restructure our expectations

I'm not unique at all, I'm a product of my environment. I am, however, better than you in several highly visible ways so it's obvious why you're reacting like a child

Oh I mean I don't either, honestly, but these urges aren't rational. My higher processes de-emphasize it, but the lizard brain wants what it wants

I haven't met a single hipster who would qualify as left-wing, honestly.

Even if I am a clone, who cares? I am what I am. You are what other people want you to be, and LOL at that.

That's not exactly true. If you look at the generations after boomers the rate is closer to 30%

Honestly, I blame my parents generation for setting the precedent saying that it's okay to throw in the towel and get re-married several times

But I also blame our generation for being dumb enough to either mimic this behavior OR thinking it is somehow better prepared for marriage than previous generations

For those who can make it work, congrats and I wish you the best. I just get sick of people getting all high and mighty because they have been married for few years.
