My freshman year at State, I went through a bad break-up. First weekend of school, I went out with a few of my suitemates to some random party... I ended up having 4 shots of Everclear including many, many other things (like 2 solo cups of PJ). I had to go to the hospital for hitting my head so many times; we also found out my BAC was 0.184.

So basically, I have been one of the people they're making this law for. And guess what, even I disagree with it. I was dumb, knew how high of an alcohol content Everclear has, and still did those things. I paid for it big time (literally, because an ER visit and a CAT scan are not cheap) and I felt like shit for over a day. Basically, kids need to learn from their mistakes and be smart. You can't hold the hands of every citizen forever or act in a paternalistic fashion...

[Edited on November 30, 2010 at 6:56 PM. Reason : I also had to shell out $30 to have my suitemate's car cleaned.. glad they were able to get it out]

"Dear Mr. Stroup,

I recently read a news article reporting that the state of North Carolina will no longer sell 95% grain alcohol at its ABC stores. The article claims you called the product "dangerous, with no redeeming social value." My questions to you are: Which alcohol products aren't dangerous when abused and which products have a redeeming social value?

Please reply at your earliest convince.

Thank you for your time.""

I'm sure he'll be replying at his earliest convince. Yet I do agree, what redeeming social value does consuming any alcoholic beverage possess? The better question these ABC board leaders should be asking themselves is what redeeming value of any kind do the local ABC boards possess? Why not privatize the market, charge a tax and rid ourselves of another retarded government entity thats unnecessary and a hindrance to our state.

"Mr. Stroup,

I am writing to address the state of over-protection that our government has deemed necessary as of late, as evidenced by recent changes regarding government sanctioned availability of alcoholic beverages with certain characteristics. You claim that 190 proof alcohol has no redeeming social value. First of all, who are you to make claims such as that? Who gets to decide what beverages are socially acceptable and which are not; where is the line drawn? Second, I believe that your actions are what are truly devoid of social value. Is our society not built upon the freedom to make our own decisions and to learn from our own mistakes? Taking away those freedoms is what truly takes away "social value". In North Carolina, over 1,400 people are killed each year by automobiles. If automobiles weren’t legal, at the end of every year 1,400 more people would still be alive. Is that a price you are willing to pay? I urge you to consider the implications of your logic and the legal precedent that you set.

Please do not read the above inquiries as rhetorical; I am genuinely interested in your response.

I mean it's not really banned officially, but it might as well be because ABC stores are no longer distributing, and they have a freaking monopoly on liquor in this state.

Do they sell it in virginia? I don't forsee myself buying everclear any time soon, but if I do it would be nice to be able to drive across the border for it.

"Dear Mr. ThePeter,

Thank you for sharing your comments and thoughts with us.

All forms of alcohol, when abused, can be dangerous. However, of the over 1100 SKU’s (stock keeping units) we carry in our stores, 190 proof grain alcohol has 21% more alcohol per serving than any other product we sell! This is the reason we felt it was the most dangerous product we sold.

North Carolina, as of today, is one of 15 states that have banned the sale of 190 proof alcohol (once local inventories are depleted). We strongly support this move although 190 proof will still be available by special order through the N.C. ABC Commission.

As to my comment about “no redeeming social value”, that was my personal opinion. Again, thanks for taking the time to share your comments.

Good to know that they'll special order it. Limoncello isn't as good with 151 proof. Law is stupid though.

I drank half a bottle of straight Everclear one night for no particular reason. That was the last time I recall drinking liquor, it's been beer only for the last 10 years.

I got the same reply as others ITT

I replied back with this.

Quote :
"Mr. Stroup,

Thanks for writing me back!

Your explanation leads me to ask another question. What happens when, in the future, new ABC leaders feel that 151 proof alcohol is the most dangerous product sold in the stores? ABC leaders will claim that 151 proof alcohol has some percentage more alcohol per serving than any other products sold! The 151 proof alcohol will seem like the most dangerous product soil in the store and will move to stop selling it, opting for the 120 proof alcohol instead.

When does the cycle end?

Thank you for your time"

Jesus people, can you at least proof read your emails so you don't look like a bunch of REtards?

I also sent an email to the ABC main office, this is what I got (and its much better than that Stroup POS):

Quote :
"Thank you for your note and for sharing your perspective. NC joins with more than a dozen other states in restricting or banning sales of 190-proof liquor products from retail shelves and has taken this step of delisting 190 proof products with the cooperation of the manufacturers.

While these 190 proof products will not be stocked in the state warehouse going forward, they can be purchased through the state's special order program. To special order a liquor product that is not on the current stock list --including Everclear 190 or Diesel 190 -- you may go to any ABC store in the state, prepay and order these products by the case.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Agnes Stevens

Fax: 919-661-5927
agnes.stevens@abc.nc.gov

So basically now you can't buy a bottle of the stuff...b/c it's so bad. But they don't mind if you buy A CASE.
