Lights on the outside of your house are sacrilegious. Same with Christmas trees

I'll have to get some pictures. I think I have some half-decent phone pictures from last year's Christmas on my laptop at home. My dad has used C7 twinkles for years on the family Christmas tree and I have never seen a better looking tree when it gets dark and you just have the tree on. We always have friends, relatives, neighbors comment on the lights when they are over around Christmas.

I have always preferred colored lights on the tree, though I've been missing them for the past few years as my girlfriend is adamantly anti colored lights (to which I have acquiesced to avoid a holiday battle) and my parents purchased a pre-lit tree (which, if they make with colored lights, is exceedingly hard to find. Or was two years ago at least.) They seem more festive, and it's what I grew up with.

Outside, depends on a number of things, including the house itself--a dignified Italianate victorian would probably look odd wearing colored lights, whereas many suburban houses of largely rectangular plan can look boring with white. My father has taken to putting white icicle lights along the roofline of their house and colored lights in the bushes across the front, which looks good to me. But I'm not picky as long as it looks well-planned, and they don't blink. I hate -- HATE -- blinking outdoor lights, especially when it's only one strand.

How about the ones that slowly fade between colors?

also, since no one reads post 49.... I thought I'd repost this gem:

Nothing wrong with a slow fade. The blinking just irritates me to no end for some reason.

I have slowly grown to love colored lights.

And I also like the big ones. You can use those to decorate, and you really don't even have to light them.

My favorite are just the white lights with some coordinating decorations. I don't know if I just associate bad things with the hodge-podge style decor on a tree or what, but I like when I tree looks intentionally decorated. Like this:

I also love this style for outdoor trees:

We've only ever had color lights on our tree, so anything else would seem out of place.

i like white lights, i dnt feel colored lights have anything to do with the mood of christmas

neighborhoods that use white lights as decoration get so much more awe out of me. the colored lights are like colored rental homes on the beach

Tacky. white make a dying tree look beautiful and holy. something about a soft glow as opposed to a mexican funeral that brings hom the holidays

I like colored lights for outside the house because it remains me of the lights my dad would put up when I was little, but on a christmas tree I prefer white lights.

aea, what do you do with all your ornaments that don't fit in with your intentionally decorated tree?

Intentionally decorated trees look so sterile. A hodgepodge of meaningful, pretty, and just fun ornaments is what feels authentic to me.

^^ seeing as we only have three ornaments that are not "intentional", they just sort of blend in. And they aren't odd looking in any way, so they wouldn't look out of place with the ornaments I would "intentionally" use. I just dislike messy looking trees. I'm not saying every ornament has to be a gold glass ball, rather things should coordinate.

That "white-themed" indoor tree from above isn't made up only of ornaments from the same set per se, but it looks like somebody actually put thought into the process rather than throwing up a couple dozen random ornaments and calling it a day.

We've done both white and color on our trees. Last year we did all red lights with gold & red ornaments. This year we have a fake white tree with white lights and sentimental ornaments, growing up I've done real trees with a mix and a hodge podge of sentimental ornaments. It rocks.

Miss the smell of a real tree.

we used to have all these cool ornaments that me and my sister had made and ones that my aunt had given us every single christmas. then my mom got the idea that a coordinated tree with a color scheme and all that would be better so we never got to hang up our ornaments with the personal significance.

it sucked.

i'm thinking of converting over to all LED lighting this year. I like the blue-ish white color of the LEDs and they use less power

Elkbayie's tree looks like one at the local homeless shelter where 20 different people all put their own spin on decorating with no central motif tying it altogether.

You've got all different kinds of lights, mardi gras beads hanging from some branches, limbs about to collapse from the weight of the ornaments, and what looks like a red bra near the top, not to mention the delightfully tacky angel which looks like it was bought off the clearance rack at Stein Mart.

No offense.
