My girlfriend gave me a custom-engraved CROSS pen for Christmas. I love it, but it seems not... enough for 60 bucks.

I prefer mechanical pencils for notes, just in a sense of if I write very quickly with a ballpoint/ink pen, my writing gets slurred.
pens/pencils for drawing, usually pencils, unless I'm just doodling
old standard wooden pencils are best for drawing or tracing on to fabric though

The first pencils my mom ever got me for school were wooden Empire #2s. Empire merged with Berol in the late '80s, then Sanford bought them in the late '90s. Sanford discontinued almost all of the Empire pencil lines, so I went a very long time without using one. Five years ago, I found a collector who had a few and bought them from him. I won't use them, though. I just like still having them.

My pencil of choice now is mechanical, the Pentel Quicker Clicker. The current model has a plastic tip and molded rubber grip, but I prefer the original metal tip without grip. You can order the originals through Pentel still, but I don't know how long the stock will hold out.

I was a loyal customer of Berol Black Warriors back in middle school when pencil fighting was awesome.

in high school, having taken many drafting classes in advance of being an engineering major, I was mechanical pencil only, and this carried all the way through college, even though I didn't end up in a real engineering major, and through my first 8 years of post college cubicle work-- lots of network diagrams drawn on engineering paper.

Now that i've had my management lobotomy and don't do anything useful anymore, I rock pens, the pilot G2 being my weapon of choice.

yeah, now i'm showing my age. Back in the 80's when i was a kid, the mirado black warrior was made by Berol, and later it was sanford, and now apparently papermate.

http://community.pencils.com/collectors/pencil-library/mirado-pencils-rich-history-eagle-berol-sanford-and-now-papermate

I didn't realize they dated back to the early 1900's.

dude, i don't know if the ticonderoga can stand up to the might of a black warrior. The metal portion at the top is far too malleable to pose much of a threat. Also, the hexagonal structure of the yellow pencil is definitely a weakness when facing a round pencil.
