It has nothing to do with the fact that girls in HS typically try to look as old as possible. The fact that they're asking if you're in college is just their way of covering their bases. Because of this, bartenders/bouncers as well as movie attendants have to watch their ass. Bartenders/bouncers often work in bad light where it is easier to hide one's age.
