because no one reads the last post:
If a couple is sharing the room with the private bathroom, then it is still 2 people per bathroom and shouldn't factor in (unless having to walk outside your room to get to the bathroom is a big deal, which it shouldn't be).
I like to divide it up by space used. Lets say you have 800 sq ft of public space (living room, kitchen, etc) and 700 sq ft of bedroom space (no idea how much a room actually has, this is just making up even numbers)
Room 1 - 200 Room 2 - 200 Room 3 - 300
Roommate 1 - 400 sq ft Roommate 2 - 400 sq ft Roommate 3 - 350 sq ft R3's partner - 350 sq ft
This would mean: 1 & 2 = 26.67% of the rent each 3 & P = 23.33% of the rent each
Or, if you consider the couple as one person, 26.67% per single roommate 46.67% for the roommate with the larger room
That actually gives you a good median between making the other roommate pay 25% vs 2/7 (28.5%), but these numbers are entirely based on the area divisions.
I once had a situation where we were splitting 4 rooms evenly, then one of the roomies had his gf move in and they said it shouldn't effect everyone else's rent, the two of them together would still account for 25% total. That was some bullshit, since she used the living room so much I never got to do anything in there. So I told them she couldn't use shared space unless she was paying for shared space.

Apartment complexes have the floor plan listed on websites. No need to measure shit up. Just find yours and use the number they provide.
Also, make sure to round your number down, and their numbers up. 12/14/2010 4:48:24 PM |

Ya this is really fair enough without making it ridiculously complicated. Typically, I expect people to pay proportional to the size/features of their room.
However, I would expect two people sharing a room to pay slightly more. Instead of sharing common areas with two roomates, you'd be sharing with three.12/14/2010 4:51:07 PM |

25% per person sounds better than 2/7, 2/7, and 3/7. Couples living in an apartment have a tendency for their stuff to creep out and take up more of the common areas. 12/14/2010 5:08:35 PM |

Well last night we came to a verbal agreement with no argument on 44% for me and the gf for the bigger room and then 28% for the 2 other rooms. Then today the other roommate has been blowing up my gf's phone bitching and complaining, flat out refusing to go higher than 25%. Said that every "adult" she had talked to agreed with her and said that she would find someone to replace us if that wasn't ok(which she can't really do b/c we are on the lease). We've never had a single issue with her before but I don't know what to do now.
I know this shit is ridiculous

Ahhh...it's your girlfriend.
Well you're too young to be living with your girlfriend anyways. And if you do have to live with your girlfriend, it should just be you and her and not as part of a college frat house.
Time to grow up. 12/14/2010 5:28:28 PM |

move out dude, you'll realize down the road in life this is completely not worth your time. Find a place and live by yourself or if you have to just one other roommate and that's it. Any more and it becomes a hassle you don't need to deal with. 12/14/2010 5:32:04 PM |

Move out. Or quit bitching and just pay the 50%.
Its what, a grand total of like $50 different? Less?
FFS I'd kill for that. Hell I'd pay for the whole place myself and have the other chicks pay me with sex for a grand total of what was it, like $900? 12/14/2010 6:27:01 PM |

I haven't bitched about it once, the other roommate has. I prob. will end up paying the 50% but wanted a little input. Just because the other person pitches a fit doesn't mean they should get their way. It's the principle of it...that they think they can agree to something and then be an ass and get their way. That mentality kills me. And yes, I am actively looking for a new place to move to. 12/14/2010 6:32:27 PM |

It's principle for them too. Don't feel entitled to pay less when you are the one adding the extra person to the mix.
This whole thread is by its very definition you bitching. If something is being done "on principle" then thats just a more proper sounding way of you being a whiner. 12/14/2010 6:36:24 PM |

I have yet to have an argument about it. We sat down and discussed it last night and came to an agreement. As I said above, today the other roommate started having a fit over it. I am trying my hardest to not have this be such a big issue. Everyone has an opinion, I understand.
^^^def. worries me

So you are saying that there is an argument about this but there is not an argument about this?

1. Clearly the best option is to say that rent went up to $1110/month. 2. agree to split it 4 ways. 3. Then offer to collect and mail in the checks. 4. ???. 5. Profit.
