not a fan per se, but i like Rooney and LeBeau a lot. i also admire the Bradshaw, Swann, and Steel Curtain days. ...and can't forget the Cowher connection, the fact that Willie Parker hated UNC, and that the Steelers gave guys like Dantonio Burnette (one of my personal heroes) a sporting chance.

they keep it real, they keep it classy, they keep it real classy..

easy for me to root for them, but still not a "fan"

My dad is from Pittsburgh, his parents and grandparents are PGH natives. I've got as much extended family in Pittsburgh as I do in NC. I lived in Pittsburgh a couple years as a very young child, and then all growing up i spent summers and thanksgivings in Pittsburgh. I regularly saw Steelers games and Pirates games at Three Rivers Stadium since i was at least 7 years old.

Here's why Pittsburgh Steelers are so popular:

-- One of the oldest professional teams in the nation.

-- Pittsburgh's historic reputation as a hard-knocks blue collar steel town

-- Chuck Noll

-- SIX-TIME SUPERBOWL CHAMPIONS (a feat matched only by ... nobody)

-- dominating the entire 1970s decade is a strong memory for age 35+

-- intense historic rivalries with other "huge" teams (Oakland, Dallas)

-- Hall of Famers : Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swann, Jack Ham, "Mean" Joe Greene, Franco Harris, Rod Woodson, etc.

-- the "Steel Curtain"

-- the "Terrible Towel"

-- Bill Cowher <-- The Triangle area is especially pro-Steeler compared to the rest of the country because of this man.

all of this contributes to and supports a compelling (if overly-romanticized) legendary status.

and by the way: Steelers >>>>> Cowboys. Fuck Dallas.

The Steelers have an intense rivalry with Oakland and Dallas?

With the amount of hate already within the NFC East I don't see how the Steelers pop up on Dallas' radar.

^^^ just because today's 35-year-olds didn't directly experience those specific games in real time, didnt mean that they didn't grow up in the immediate shadow of that legacy, watching endless repeat after repeat of every single glorious Steeler "Road to the Super Bowl" moment served up in slow motion complete with snow fall and icy breath and perspiration and with dramatic narration on every third cable television channel, just about every fucking night.

(For the record, I personally have fragmentary memories of both Super Bowl XIII (vs Dallas Cowboys) and XIV (vs Los Angeles Rams), in 1979 and 1980. My younger brother, who is 35, "remembers" more details of those games than I do)

^^ Okay, wise guy, using all your superior reading comprehension and logic skills, tell me how the Pittsburgh Steelers are *not* "ONE of the oldest teams".

I mean half the National League predates the Steelers by 50 years

Half the American League by 30 years

They're the fifth-oldest NFL team apparently

So, okay, they are one of the 20 oldest franchises in the country

You're playing fast and loose with 'one of' though

Real reason for the Steelers bandwagon: they win a lot, people are dumb.

Gotcha.

I mainly hate them because Rothlisburger gets paraded around and is a rapist.

At least the Eagles fans acknowledge that Vick was involved in dog fighting, Big Ben's latest PR blunder was wrecking his motorcycle.

First time it happened...okay, just some broad trying to get her 15 minutes for $15,000

But the second time?

And then his team gave him the cold shoulder?

That's when he lost credibility.

you mean the sloppy drunk 20 year old college student who claimed Roethlisberger had sex with her, yet the ER nurse couldnt find any evidence? and sworn Law Enforcement Officers who testify no knowledge of any events the drunk chicky claimed they were part of?

yeah, he's a jerk and a fool who fucks around with stupid young chicks he really has no business being with. If i were his friend/teammate, I'd be concerned/embarrassed for him too.

but you have to be convicted of a crime to be called a criminal. Or, even for most judgmental assholes, you should at least be charged.

and Ernie, it's hard to have a "significant portion of the country" believe something about you, true or false, when nobody knows who you are or gives a shit about you because you havent' accomplished anyhting in life other than rising to the position of college website moderator.

which, I will admit, is more than I've done in my own public life

There's also James Harrison who, in addition to dirty hits on the field, also hits women.

I really like Mike Tomlin, but it's disappointing that two of the biggest names on his teams are trash doesn't particularly endear me to them.

awesome.

So does Sean Locklear, apparently, but then scares his women to recant. too bad Locklear helped lose Super Bowl XL for the Seahawks against the Steelers for excessive holding of defenders. tried to make them his bitch like he does outside of a Belltown billiards club.

Yep, Sean Locklear and Koren Robinson. Thanks, NC State , for representin' over here in Seattle.

That's me. My mother grew up in Pittsburgh. So even though I've never lived there myself, I've been a Steelers fan my whole life (the Panthers weren't even a team yet so it was an easy choice).

I'm a Steelers fan because my childhood best friend's family moved from Pittsburgh to my neighborhood. At the time, I didn't really watch NFL (no local team) and so whenever I was at their house and a game was on, they all pulled for the Steelers... so I became a fan by association. Now, I don't own any Steelers gear, or mouth off about my fanhood; I just generally pull for the Steelers.
