I remember one guy that used to aggressively pan handle on Hillsborough. He kinda looked like Jeff Hanneman. One time he followed me into the McDonald's that used to be a theater and took my change directly from the cashier

So I make sure to never give to aggressive pan handlers. I also don't give to people that lie... I'm from out of town and came to visit my sister, my alternator broke and I need to get back to my pregnant wife. I need money to fix it, can you spare $5? Nope, I saw you a couple of days ago. Shoulda walked home.

saying no doesn't make you an asshole, it is not our duty to give anyone anything, and were the situations reversed, would they help us out?

try this, if you see the same bum everyday, start asking them* for cigarettes or spare change in a loud voice so they can't grovel up next to you quiet-like and drop their bullshit on you. do this every time you even think a bum is gonna ask.

let me put you in the situation my technique evolved from...it's an address, and time really.

3 maiden ln. 1999-2000. imagine living RIGHT NEXT DOOR to a plasma center and corner store strip mall that includes a bar and a wings joint. Now imagine you smoke a pack a day, drink a bit, etc. so you need stuff from this store, everyday. now let's say there are 3-4 bums donating plasma EVERY DAY at this place, asking you for change EVERY DAY, TWICE, THRICE a day for your hard earned money/property. They all have money in their pocket, a beer and sandwich, asking YOU for fucking change everyday. all the sudden my tactics aren't so assholish.

the thing about this situation, is my church is involved with a homeless program downtown Charlotte. So they give you a place to stay and meal for the night everyday throughout the week. The only stipulation that you need to pass to take part is to be drug free. So I suggested for this couple to go talk to them because it is right down the street. The guy said they did and they asked him to go to the shelter instead. That let me know they were tested and not drug free. He proceeded to tell me his sob story of how he was robbed at the shelter and how his girl got bed bugs.

I will not give money to homeless people.

They usually leave or ask for money. So the problem takes care of itself.

I will say this: most homeless people have family of some kind, somewhere that know full well their own flesh and blood is rotting on the street, and has not done anything to change it.

Tell them you wish you had some cash for them, but you just spent all your money on heroin and alcohol and there's just no cash left.

I live in a city that's basically full of mentally insane homeless people, and I still manage to not treat them like dirt because they're "annoying me"

When I lived in Raleigh they would always be standing near stop light around Crabtree Valley Mall. I'd give them extra water bottles that were left in my car. Samwise16 later informed me that leaving bottled water in the sun is a carcinogen. Oops. I gave one guy $5 because he had a nice, bright red NCSU hat on and we had a big game that day. I was hoping it would give us some ,luck but we still lost. The other guy was hot so i gave him $1. I see a lot of them with crunches, but they still walk around on both their legs.

My first year in Raleigh as a freshman I gave out money pretty regularly. I'm from a small coastal town, so I wasn't really used to the bums and didn't know how to handle them. The guy on Hboro broke it for everyone else though. I don't know if other people know him, Slim, what an asshole. He hangs out in front of Bruegger's every day, and if you don't give him money he swears at you. It's not just that though, usually he's hanging out talking on his cell phone, and will even ask you for money while he's talking to someone on the phone. If you can afford a cell phone and are always talking on it when I see you, I ain't giving you that "$8 you need for insulin".

What I really don't like is when they do it on the train. Come sit down next to you and pin you in and just keep demanding money. It is not only really uncomfortable, but makes me feel in danger like if I don't give them something they are gonna hurt me and that if I pull out my wallet they are just gonna take the whole thing. It's a no win and I absolutely hate it.

I had a guy come up to a group of me + some friends and basically say "I ain't gonna bullshit you, I don't need food or any of that shit, I just need a beer" so we all pitched in some singles. Honesty is the best policy I suppose.

I hate the ones with the retarded stories about running out of gas. So you say your house was robbed in Charlotte and you ran out of gas here in Raleigh and now can't get back, along with a bunch of shit that doesn't add up? Fuck off, I'm trying to order some Wendy's.

I admit that working downtown has made me jaded. Part of my last job was keeping panhandlers out of the cafe tables at Busy Bee and it was generally a shitty interaction all around. I have to ask them to leave to keep my job, and they're just trying to keep on keepin' on. It made me really class-self-conscious.

Most don't have their permits. They're allowed to sit quietly with a sign but not generally allowed to approach people verbally.

A permit for panhandling? What, is that their way of imposing an income tax when they arrest and fine a guy for not having a permit? They probably charge for the permit too, that way they are guaranteed some money.

people can ask for money on their behalf as in charity but they are not allowed to ask for money themselves without a permit. Law.

there was a guy at east village who gave me the same story about five times how his family is in Wilmington and he needs money for the bus to get back to them. I offered to buy him a bus ticket one time and he declined...... that was probably time #2. When i heard his story time #3 i was wasted and bitched him out really hard in the parking lot. the people on the deck were all like, "leave him alone dude" and i was like, "fuck you, i have heard this shit before and this bitch needs to get out of my fucking face" and then i got a cab. when i heard the story after that, i was shocked that he didnt remember me but just didnt react and kept walking.

There was a guy who used to hang out outside the ABC store at mission valley and on hillsborough st. who did this. He was funny. I gave him money every single time.

I don't give money to people who just hold up a sign or ask for food or make up stories though, you gotta make me laugh.

You should just be glad they're not fucking robbing you

the person is homeless, not on stage at a comedy show
