The only mod intervention here has been to seek credit for a reference to a canceled sitcom. Despite veering off topic, the thread has provoked more original thought than the majority of movie threads, whose sole purpose is to reveal spoilers and shit on casting decisions. 2/9/2011 4:08:21 PM |

So you're saying that last week when Jeepin4x4 saw this thread he recognized the potential for a Party Down reference, and decided to let it escape? Does that make armorfrsleep Bruce Willis in this scenario? 2/9/2011 4:14:06 PM |

this thread is barely 24 hours old and i've monitored it from the beginning. It's veered off topic from the original title, but the OP hasn't seemed to mind and the discussion has been fairly entertaining and thought provoking aside from some minor trolling that comes with the territory. I will suggest that another thread regarding the film be created at a later time however.2/9/2011 4:43:19 PM |

Really thought I wouldn't have to explain it. Perhaps my Looper references are too subtle and don't belong in a hard sci-fi thread.2/10/2011 10:04:55 AM |

appreciate it. I actually posted that before I even saw Jeepin4x4's post
I saw the thread title, immediately went to find the picture, opened thread, replied before reading...then read and noticed he had already beat me with the PD reference doh! I decided to leave it up anyway though.

This is slated for release on September 28th of next year, one of Hitfix's critics got an early look at the film and had this to say:
Quote : | "Right now, unfinished, with FX shots left to do and with some moments that need to be tweaked, "Looper" is the best thing Rian Johnson's made so far. By leaps and bounds. It is a movie that Bruce Willis fans will feel very comfortable filing on the same shelf where they keep "12 Monkeys" and "Unbreakable." It is a true science-fiction film, unafraid of the genre, but the movie's beating broken heart is what makes it accessible to anyone. Sony/Tri-Star have something truly special here, a small intimate personal movie that delivers a huge movie experience without ever compromising the things that make it feel so intimate in the first place." |

Yeah, Rian Johnson is one of the most promising young directors in Hollywood. Looper and Gangster Squad (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1321870/) are on the short list of films I'm most excited about in 2012. 11/10/2011 3:32:35 PM |

Carruth got a special thanks credit. I thought he would be involved more. I wonder if he got pushed out as it picked up.
I guess the theme of the thread is hard scifi, so maybe Shane suffered the same fate as Roman would have...

So explain to me why they can't just send a dead body to the past? Put the guy they want disposed in the capsule, kill him, and drop him off. Way less risky and nobody could ever escape.

Pretty good.
SPOILER
The hand through the hair at the end. That wasn't supposed to signify that she was his mother or anything crazy? I didn't see that at all in the film.
The child's acting was ok for a kid that young. But it always sucks when you have to rely on a kid for a role that important. Lost something in those moments when he was all TKing.

SPOILER THAT I CLEARLY DON'T CARE ABOUT BECAUSE YOU WILL STILL SEE WHAT I WROTE.
^Gawd, we were talking about that in the theatre. The director "answered" some questions in a couple interviews about the ending, without mentioning why Sara puts her hand through Joe's hair. A bunch of people (including myself) think it's just a heavy-handed mistake, if anything, not meant to be an addition twist. The director should know that, that ANYONE vaguely familiar with time travel movies and media, would see that and IMMEDIATELY suspect a twist with Joe's mother. In a different genre of movie, you could do that as a "coincidental, poignant gesture" that's just out of chance--but not in a paradox-laden time-travel movie.
The movie itself has some holes in its own time-travel logic, but fuck if I'm going to address that here. Movie was entertaining, but still heavy-handed. Definitely liked it though. It's no PRIMER. 10/2/2012 12:57:34 AM |

SPOILERS TAG HERE AS WELL I GUESS
Anything involving backwards moving time travel will always involve paradoxes. Just have to overlook that stuff I guess. This movie handled it at least somewhat better though (his memory being cloudy, as the things he does affects his own memory now).
As for Sara and the hair touching. I mean, it would make sense for a woman who strokes her son's head to comfort him, to also stroke other people's head to comfort them. If we are assuming that she only strokes her sons head, and therefore Joe is her son, that would mean that she KNOWS that Joe is her son. Joe is not Cid because Joe would get a scar on his cheek when Cid got shot.
The only scenario I could see where this makes any sense is this: some time in the future (let's say 15 years from this movie, so 2059) Cid invents time travel. He sends his kid brother Joe (accident? on purpose?) back 30 years to 2029. Joe grows up without a family and eventually becomes a Looper. I suppose you could alter the years to make it all line up a little better. Even in that case, the 2044 Sara wouldn't know that she had a baby in the future who came back.

SPOILER
I'm pretty sure you're over thinking. It's a throwback to the earler point in the movie where all he wants it the comfort of the hand through his hair. Sure, it reminded him of his mother, but that's what made it the comfort. In the end it's just a reinforcement that Joe did the right thing because he receives that comfort he wanted. No extra time travel paradox here, now Cid has a chance to grow up normally since future Joe never came back to kill him (and get this mom instead)
All in all I really liked the movie. JGL contirues to be an amazing actor, and of course any movie with Bruce Willis and a gun is bound to be good. The biggest nitpick I had is that I wasn't a big fan of the make-up on JGL. 10/2/2012 3:35:05 PM |
BEU All American 12512 Posts user info edit post |
SPOILER ^that actually makes sense. But good god is it a reach for all that to make sense . I interpreted it as just a gesture to signify the importance of a mothers affect on their children growing up.
But if she is somehow his mother......... Wait wait. He impregnated her when they had sex? oh Lawd. Well if she is his mother she had sex with her son.......
Can he be his own father?
