I don't think you fully comprehend the situation.

who are trying to catch you for other crimes you've committed? Well now you're not so good at heart are you."

I don't think they would argue that this was anything other than revenge.

"Then he (sort of) took his findings public: Barr was quoted in the Financial Times a few days ago as saying he had uncovered names of senior figures of Anonymous, and denying he would deliver them to the police."

"Why did he talk to the Financial Times in the first place? Barr says he had been preparing to give a talk at the B-Sides security conference in San Francisco on Feb. 14 about information security in social media, and he wanted to drum up some publicity ahead of time to help spur the debate."

1. Research Anonymous.
2. Brag about your insider knowledge to drum up publicity.
3. ...
4. Profit!

If he pulled this type of thing with the mob or a gang they would have found his body floating in a river, so he should probably count his blessings and learn a lesson from it. Had his own intentions been pure he would have completed his work, transferred what he had learned to the FBI, and nobody would know who he is. His intention was to gain fame and money off Anonymous' name and it backfired.
