It's also entirely possible the Gamestop employees didn't know that either. I'm sure that some of them are actually well informed and knowledgeable, but it's still a terrible minimum wage job so most of your Gamestop employees don't know anything but how to ring you up and annoy you into reserving games.4/20/2011 1:20:40 PM |

What is this $60 crap? I only paid $39.99 for Portal 2. 4/20/2011 3:08:58 PM |

^Yeah, seriously, hahah. And it's like 37 on Amazon. Suck it console gamers.
Seriously though, the game is 6-8 hours play-through for Portal-loving game reviewers, so closer to 8 hour play through for most, especially for people who weren't super into the first.
8 hour playthrough is exactly average for the video game community for a single-player campaign.
But there's also co-op, and I'm sure challenge stuff at some point.
So CONSIDERABLY more content and considerably longer. 4/20/2011 3:33:56 PM |

*Confession Time* I never played Portal 1 so my friend gave me a free copy of it that he got when he preordered Portal 2. I played about 20 mins last night, enough to get the second portal gun, and I am totally hooked! The computer voice thing is hilarious! 4/20/2011 3:37:11 PM |

I liked Portal 2's solo-play, to a degree.
I didn't feel like it was a real "full" sequel. Too linear. Not as much freedom (in puzzles) or difficulty compared to the first, imo. Too much tutorial. The frequent anticlimatic loading pauses.
Maybe my expectations were too high; Gabe Newell: "Oh Portal 2's great. It's the best game we've ever done."
Co-op is fun, though. Makes up for sp's shortcomings. 4/20/2011 3:55:20 PM |

Begs the question: Why are PC games consistently $10 cheaper? Is it that Sony gets exactly $10 for every PS3 game sold while Microsoft gets $0 for every PC game sold? 4/20/2011 5:01:30 PM |
HockeyRoman All American 11811 Posts user info edit post |
That is becoming less and less the case. When I bought Dead Space 2 is was $60 for PC. 4/20/2011 5:03:00 PM |
saturnine Veteran 385 Posts user info edit post |
^^If that's not sarcasm, then yeah, that's exactly it.
Microsoft and Sony get a $10 cut on every game sold, so publishers hiked console game prices to $60. Then they thought what the hell, PC gamers won't know the difference; so they started doing it on PC games as well.

If theres a AAA title that comes out for $50 or $60 thats not very good everyone either waits until it goes on sale for $20 during a steam deal or they pirate it.
if a game is $60 on pc its a good sign its not worth the price

Yeah, the big name games are starting have an initial price point of $60 on the PC now, but the thing about PC games... they always come down in price much quicker than their console counterparts. How much is Dead Space 2 on the PC now? $30-40?

Finished the co-op in about 3 hours, probably ~ halfway through the SP now. I will say that this game excels at making me feel stupid for over thinking things.
There's one level in the co-op especially that we almost lost our minds over, only to find that the solution was very simple, if not at all obvious. 4/21/2011 6:32:11 PM |

I think sometimes that's all you need (e.g. Professor Layton). Plus, the nature of the puzzles, the dialogue/monologue, and the additional elements to the story make it all worthwhile. 4/21/2011 7:14:36 PM |

seriously not trying to troll. i know people enjoy different things, but i can't fathom how so many people like this after watching a few videos of game play...it really seems boring to me. i guess i just can't believe i didn't have a grasp on what so much of the gaming community likes - that's more disappointing to me than anything really...you like to think that your opinion is the majority opinion. and then when you find out the majority is far from your opinion, you just can't believe it at first.
edit:
the same thing applies to that show archer and a lot of other shit on TV. stuff i hate is loved by the majority and stuff i love is hated by them. i guess i should just begin to realize i don't think for the majority...people are fucktards. /lesson learned on tdub.

Beat it yesterday. The ending was awesome. Overall this game did very well, bringing over the quirky humor and dialog of the first game while still keeping it fresh with new puzzles and mechanics.
I get that Portal isn't suppose to have a "serious" story, but I find it hard to believe that Aperture Science can have such a shitty budget when they have a facility that extends literally miles below ground. 4/22/2011 7:50:38 AM |

You know I could say the same thing about any shooter.
"how do so many people enjoy this game? it's just one big shoot em' up...not much else to do but shoot guns and kill people..."
I think your opinion is what's wrong with gaming today. I enjoy a good shooter as much as every other gamer but thinking that a game has to have guns to be enjoyable and successful is just sad.4/22/2011 9:10:46 AM |

I personally can't wait for Portal 3, circa Christmas 2014
my idea: Chell brings the Aperture Science tech to the wider world, and with her first-mover advantage she threatens to conquer it and then your task is to keep from getting pwned by all the other fucktards with portal guns and defeat Chell main difference: instead of the closed spaces of Aperture Laboratories, there's just one wide world-spanning level and the amount of processing power required to shoot portals a couple miles away will make Portal 3 the new Crysis in terms of GPU benchmarking 4/22/2011 11:31:29 AM |

$55 for the PS3 version from Amazon + $1 for launch day delivery - $20 Amazon gift card - $24 Gamestop trade-in credit
= $12 for the PC version I unlocked with the PS3 key.
Granted, I'm stuck with money in Amazon and Gamestop gift cards, but considering how much I buy there anyways it might as well be cash to me.
Gamestop cashier as I trade in Portal 2 for PS3 the day after it was released: Him: "Beat it already?" Me: "Not yet." 4/26/2011 3:16:07 PM |
