at long range, an AK-47 is a piece of shit with no accuracy. at close range, 4 somali pirates toting AK-47s would fuck your world up. The game changer would be having a captain in your boat that understood naval maneuvering and actually had a boat capable of changing course fast enough to at least give you a tactical advantage for a short amount of time. If these Somali pirates have any sense at all, then they prey on slower underpowered ships.

I talked to a guy in South Florida once that worked on a gambling boat. He said that they had an arsenal of grenade launchers and thermite grenades at their disposal, and the strategy was to sink the pirate's boat instead of trying to kill the pirates. Then again, they only had to be 3 miles off the American Coast to operate, so they had the coast guard at their disposal in case they took on too much damage.

The Coast Guard has some LEDETs deployed to Africa right now conducting anti-piracy ops in conjunction with the navy. There may be some PSU's deployed as well. The USCG units are the only ones who can legally arrest pirates or terrorists in international waters I believe. The other services just have to wait until they are shot at or some other eminent danger, due to rules of engagement.

there is no way in hell that anyone who is free, anywhere in the world, would want to be locked up for 10 or 30 years in american prison. yes, it's better than a Mexican prison or a Turkish prison or an Iranian prison. but you still don't eat or shit or shower or go to bed without permission. that is no way for anyone to live a life, and if you think some Somalian pirate is looking for an "opportunity" to go live in an American federal prison for 20 years, you're fucking stoned.

anyone whose ever spent even the smallest amount of time locked up will tell you that prisons suck, it is NOT a country club where dudes just clown around all day lifting weights and watching TV and playing games and smoking cigarettes. its dangerous when it's not completely mind-numbing. you waste your days away thinking about everything you could do if you just ever could get out, and it will drive your head insane.

oh, they fucking feed you 3 meals a day? yay, that's a thrill. 'cause damn, you know those Somalians just love to stare at the wall all day long waiting to get a plain hotdog and box of orange kool aid. And they be grateful to get it too, right?

I think to you may not understand the conditions for people in an extreme 3rd world country like Somalia, that would turn someone into a pirate. These men have grown up in a situation where there's no guarantee you'll make it through the week. While I agree with you that they would much rather make a profit on the seas than be in prison, if we're making it possible for them to think that if I get caught, It's still better than where I was before, then we're failing.

I really wouldn't be too concerned about RPG-7s. There are two possible cases - you have a small ship, in which case anything past 100m is a coin-toss with RPGs, or you have a large ship, in which case you can shoot it full of holes all you want, but it ain't gonna sink.
