after filling up at a BP today I'm confused how this could happen. The diesel pump was clearly labeled, it was the only pump with 2 handles, and you would have to press a "diesel" button to operate it. Also, the handle was a different color.

However, I'm sorry you had to drop all that cash. So much for emergency fund

the pump i filled up at had a black, silver, gold, and green.

they have others with one green (that you choose the gas grade) and one black (diesel)

it was stupid of me i already admitted that. i was just saying i am not the only person its happened to at BP.

i filled up at shell today and read the pump 3 times before pulling the trigger

would gasoline damage a diesel engine? I thought it's the other way around that you should be worried about.

wikipedia is your friend...

Gasoline is used in spark ignition engines, diesel is used in compression ignition engines... so the air/fuel ratios and general engine tuning are way different. note also that diesel injection pumps rely on the lubricity of the diesel fuel to lubricate the internals - so if you would try to run gas the pumps will fail
