my point was that massive waves arent hitting hawaii, so its not likely that anything noticeable will hit the west coast

So exactly how far inland does this tidal wave go?

Those videos/pictures are horrible. I couldn't imagine being there.

Events like this make other stuff in your life seem pretty insignificant, at least for me.

for any other geo nerds out there, USGS has published the focal mechanism for the quake:

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqinthenews/2011/usc0001xgp/neic_c0001xgp_wmt.php

having lunch with a professor today that does massive amounts of research over there. hopefully no one he knew was involved...

^^ I really hope those two cars on the bridge are motionless and empty and not actually trying to escape. I find myself trying to determine the best escape route either way.

They better jump that ditch and hope for the best.

they just said it on CNN. Not sure how valid you consider that, but they are also reporting fires and 'cooling problems'

Must be happening just now, since both Fox and CNN articles say there are no radiation leaks. Crazy

I mean, it could be ABC News who goes and interviews this guy

Quote :
""Up to 100 percent of the volatile radioactive Cesium-137 content of the pools could go up in flames and smoke, to blow downwind over large distances," said Kevin Kamps, a nuclear waste specialist at Beyond Nuclear, which is an advocacy group that opposes nuclear weapons and power.

"Given the large quantity of irradiated nuclear fuel in the pool, the radioactivity release could be worse than the Chernobyl nuclear reactor catastrophe of 25 years ago." "

From some random website

Quote :
"It’s not in the ocean … it’s inside the mouth of a walled harbor. Looks like the water is going inland on one side, and out to sea on the other, with the effect of a vortex being formed.

This movie shows the exact location of the whirlpool relative to the harbor:
