so if a member of your family has a depressive episode and mentions they might kill themselves, what would you do? encourage it, or try to help them through it?

that is all well and good but we are still apparently operating under the assumption that everyone that wants to die is depressed

no, we are operating under the assumption that the MAJORITY of people who are suicidal do not want to die

i'd assume this person was coming to me for counsel and i'd encourage them to keep on living, as presently, that's my own preference (though I often internally debate the subject)

however, if they went on to kill themselves anyway or did so without ever coming to me at all, I'd feel sadness and (most likely) miss them. but i wouldn't think what they did was wrong.

something about this distinction interests me, but i can't quite put my finger on what it is

at one point can someone be labeled "depressed?"

I don't think it's wrong to kill yourself. I just think that many people who commit suicide would rather have lived, but were not presented with the means to do so.

It's so retarded to say they don't want to die and then kill themselves.

That kind of retardation is and should be rewarded with death.

It's so simple.

maybe, but again, that doesn't account for the subset of people who actually do commit suicide

you can't know how many of them wanted to be dead

No one wants to die. They just want a better life and don't see a way to get that for themselves. If every suicidal person had an option between killing themselves and banging big titted blonde bitches every day and not killing themselves, they'd pick B.

They do have that option.

It's called rape.

Laws can't stop suicidal people, obviously, since suicide is illegal. The worst thing that can happen to you is... surprise!!! DEATH.

That could be one solution. Having a good support network is another.

Right, but I can infer from people haven't succeeded or haven't attempted it yet.

When I'm in a good mood, suicide always makes me think of the theme song to M*A*S*H.

Through the early morning fog I see

Vision of the things to be...

there is a difference between suicide in people who are going through a rough patch compared to those that have always wanted to commit suicide, due to the fact that whatever they are facing and can't handle won't go away. I think it is ok for people that are dying of cancer to have the doctor's help in a humane way, if they have no chance of survival. But some people just need to find help, but they are too full of pride to take care of the problem that way.

I support the right to suicide but only in certain situations.

People say its selfish when people do it, but when people attempt it or live miserable lives everyone just ignores them or says they want attention. Besides being around people who are downers sucks ass, and if they don't want to be here then who are we to tell them they have to stick with it.

I'm AstralAdvent and i approved this message.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dax_Cowart

Quote :
"Dax Cowart (born Donald Cowart) is an attorney noted for the ethical issues raised by efforts to sustain his life against his wishes, following an accident in which Cowart suffered severe and disabling burns over most of his body. Cowart's case has become highly famous in the realm of medical ethics.

In July 1973, Cowart, then a pilot in the Air Force reserve, and his father were visiting a tract of land that his father was thinking of purchasing. The land lay in a small valley and, unbeknownst to the Cowarts, a gas leak had caused the valley to become filled with propane gas. After surveying the land, the Cowarts returned to their car, and the sparking of the ignition set the gas on the floor of the valley ablaze, severely burning both men. According to Cowart:

I was burned so severely and in so much pain that I did not want to live even in the early moments following the explosion. A man who heard my shouts for help came running down the road, I asked him for a gun. He said, 'Why?' I said, 'Can’t you see I am a dead man? I am going to die anyway. I need to put myself out of this misery.' In a very kind and compassionate caring way, he said, 'I can’t do that.'[1]

Cowart's father died en route to the hospital, but Cowart himself survived the ride to the hospital, despite the fact that he was refusing medical treatment because he felt he would not be able to regain his former level of activity. Cowart's injuries included the loss of both his hands, eyes, and ears, and the loss of skin over 65-68% of his body.

While in the hospital, Cowart continued to insist then that he wanted to die; his doctors refused. Cowart says that he was "forcibly treated for 10 years" although he continually begged his doctors to end treatment and allow him to die. Instead, Cowart was subjected to medical treatments, which he likened to being "skinned alive" on a regular basis, including being dipped in a chlorinated bath to fight infection and having the bandages covering his body regularly stripped and replaced. He was provided with only a limited supply of painkillers, since their risks were not well understood at the time. He was denied access to means of communication by which he might seek legal assistance in ending the treatments.[1] He attempted to commit suicide on several occasions, but was prevented each time."

"if the same thing were to occur tomorrow, knowing I could reach this same point, I still would not want to undergo the pain and agony that I had to undergo to be alive now"
-Cowart

It's funny how people don't understand the difference of opinion.

To the straight men in here:

You'd never sleep with a dude, right?. They are disgusting and not attractive at all, right? Well then, how do you explain how all straight girls LOVE dudes and are attracted to them? Their brains are wired differently! You certainly cannot explain their mind using your own mind, right?!

Similarly, suicide looks very unattractive to you. You'd never contemplate it! However, people who commit suicide are really attracted to the idea! If they weren't, they wouldn't even ponder the idea!
Please, stop using your own preferences to describe what people are "thinking" when they commit suicide.

I know suicide is illegal, but perhaps you could argue you killed yourself in self-defense since you knew you were going to kill yourself, and so you intervened and killed yourself first. Beautiful logic

Someone from TWW should leave that as a suicide note.

Anyone that posts below should commit suicide. You're disgrace to your family and no one's going to miss you.

After the 37billionth "Big Bang" occurs maybe one of your sorry ass atoms will help make some future paramecium in another primordial soup divide.

It'll be more of a contribution to the universe than your current atomic configuration.

I was just thinking this the other day. I can't figure out what's wrong with someone choosing to opt out of life. I've had a couple people lately tell me that they sometimes think about killing themselves and I tell them that things will get better, but I kind of wonder why I'm trying to talk them out of it. I mean, things do get better, then they get worse again...that's kind of how life goes.
