I grew up in Lincolnton and worked one summer in Hickory. It is far from being one of the worst in NC.
Btw, anyone ever heard of Talleywhackers? It's supposed to be the male version of Hooters that was in Hickory for a while.

Hickory has an incredible authentic German restaurant. I cant think of any other city in NC that has food worth a 2+ hour drive.

Hickory sucks. Catawba County seems to have more republicans than any other county.
i moved to Philly for two years then came to visit my folks in Catawba County and a redneck biker actually gave me the bird.... I guess because of the Obama sticker on my car. (or Wolfpack sticker?? since most rednecks love Carolina)

It is tough being in Catawba county when you are on the more liberal side of life. However, it does make it a lot easier to put up with people who are dumb different in their political views, and religious views (although there are plenty of Lutherans around there) later on in life.

OH wow...I love me some Catawba County. I sure as hell didn't when I lived there and even through college but since then I've lived in Cumberland, Robeson, and now Columbus County.

You learn the value of a place when you live in shitty, BFE locations that require you to either wade through swamps of army guys, lumbees, or drive 1 hr+ to ANYTHING decent (shopping, food, entertainment, etc).

Oh and as for Hickory being the shittiest, obviously you have not been to Lumberton.


On an additional note, I grew up in the Lake Norman side of the county and stopped going to Hickory once Mooresville got big.

Cumberland county can be pretty rough if you pick the wrong area, but there are a FEW decent areas.
Robeson county just sucks though. I can't fathom why ANYBODY would choose to live in Robeson county.

They are the best greasy spoon in that town. I used to think they were the best ever until I discovered Ed's and Ward's in Whiteville.

I know the man that runs Ferguson's. Great guy and family. They do have odd hours and they are not set in stone. I went one Saturday and the sign said that the weather was too nice to be at work. Ha! They usually stay open until 1.

Your perception is skewed when you're used to Raleigh. I moved to Hickory and i think it sucks, but thats because i lived in Raleighwood for so long.

Things i hate about Hickory:
1)Fat religious people
2)Only 2 good bars really (Crescent Moon and Olde Hickory...Mellow Mushroom doesn't count bc its a restaurant)
3)The fucking roads
4)Just way too many rednecks and uneducated people

Hickory is however only 1 hour away from Asheville, Charlotte, and skiing.....and housing is cheap here.
