diesels here.. so think clogged intake manifolds and leaking injection pumps.
the mk5 had their share of issues (2.0t hpfp camshaft issues, hello?)
mk6s are still kinda new, but the guy i know that has one has not had any problems with it that i know of... its a gti, so not a diesel.
had a mk6 clean diesel come into the shop last week. interesting stuff.. factory v-band on the downpipe (hadn't see that from vw yet) and a whole lot of emissions crap on the exhaust. the clean diesels are QUIET. i would guess at least partially because they put this rigid-fibrous cover on the oil pan (think of the material of that crap on the bottom of the hood)
there was a mk5 tdi. jetta, 2006 only, i think.
pat, it's only been 18 years (the 2.0 was introduced in 93).. but whatever.. the point was to compete with the econoboxes, at least in that model jetta (the base one, the cheap one). i heard you can get it without a/c and even without a radio.. weird. wonder if it has hand-crank windows..? and with the reliability of that engine, why not? i wonder what the details will be..
i mean, it is the same 2.0 engine, but there were changes made.. particularly, in the mk4 they went to a chain-driven oil pump (previous was driven off intermediate shaft/distributor) and, speaking of, they also went to a coilpack. went to an internal water pump, driven off the timing belt as well, previously external v-belt driven. they also changed the manifold designs, and the exhaust manifold was a tubular piece instead of cast.
oh.. and..

I've been to the plant in Mexico -- I work for a supplier.
I own two jetta TDIs (2006 & 2003) / have friend who has a 2011 jetta tdi (traded his 2006 tdi in on it).
I will not but a 2011 jetta friend wants his 2006 tdi back.
Do not buy.4/16/2011 12:37:24 PM |

Not all Golf's are made in Germany, my '02 has 'Made in Brazil' stamped almost all over the damned thing along with the VW/Audi marking on half the mechanical items.

I don't mind cheap workmanship/interior quality/etc if they're reliable and cheap to repair. Oh, and it has to actually be cheap to buy.
