I'm a huge G105 fan but even I'm getting tired of how often they repeat songs.
I loved the new Lady Gaga song when it first came out but G105 and 93.9 have played the crap out of it and I turn the channel when it comes on now
And I listen to 93.9 in the morning but they seem to play the exact same songs in the morning.

i like g105 because i like top 40. but when i hear born this way (which isn't even a good song) and that enrique iglesias song twice every hour, then theres a problem.
I can think of so many good top 40 type songs that should get a piece of the airplay but they don't. I seriously don't understand how these stations select their lineups, but it makes me sad when songs are being overplayed that have been overplayed for the last 3-4 months.
I sincerely think that g105 has only about 10 songs in their daily lineups, i just don't get it. 4/13/2011 3:02:18 PM |

During my hour drive to work I have it on Rush Limbaugh and switch over to Clark Howard whenever he is talking about something interesting. On the way home back to Burlington I listen to Alan Colmes and Jason Lewis. Can Raleigh even pick up 100.3? It's a rock station in Greensboro but I haven't tried to see if I can get it here yet. I'd like to give a +1 to Surf 98 in Wilmington and 106.5 The End in Charlotte (which you can pick up in G-boro all the way to Boone). Oh, and Scratch & Sniff is the most obnoxious, musically related thing I've heard on radio. 4/13/2011 3:13:22 PM |

All signs point to the record companies that market this stuff to Clear Channel. As long as digital recordings (that can be duplicated as many times as they need to be) are viewed as property, there will continue to be a thriving "pop market" of shit music. If you oppose the homogenization of music, then you should oppose intellectual property laws that allow it to take place. 4/13/2011 4:00:17 PM |

I, too gave up on radio especially since moving out to this tiny town. I have a XM free trial but don't like it that much. I use last.fm on my phone. I tried Pandora out, but for me it only played overplayed and wildly popular music from bands I didn't like, no matter how many thumbs down I gave...which usually ended up in pandora forcing me to listen to some shit song I didn't like. Not to mention commercials...fuck Pandora

If you listen to a popular station, the playlist generally goes like this:
POPPIN BOTTLES IN THE ICE, LIKE A BLIZZARD
followed by
CANT READ MY, CANT READ MY, NO HE CANT READ MY POKER FACE
followed by
SHE AIN'T AN ACTRESS BUT SHE MAKE MOVIES
followed by
DONT STOP MAKE IT POP DJ BLOW MY SPEAKERS UP
followed by
STUCK IN A BAD ROMANCE
followed by
POPPIN BOTTLES IN THE ICE, LIKE A BLIZZARD
and then it repeats.
No need to buy the most popular songs, just turn on the radio. I think we can all agree that these 5 songs are 5 of the best ever written. Radio only plays talented artists. Animal Collective and The Polyphonic Spree have no talent, which is why their shit never gets played.
I once heard a station play a song by The Smashing Pumpkins. The station converted to country the next day. 4/13/2011 4:49:00 PM |

No, that's exactly how they sound, all the time.
To cement that fact, they brought in The Situation from Jersey Shore to Mirage (also a trashy club that G105 practically lives in).4/13/2011 5:45:16 PM |

Yes! If people really disliked these songs so much, they would turn their radio off. A radio station is an ad-selling operation that happens to play music.
Quote : | "I stopped listening altogether in Raleigh b/c the rock station(s) absolutely blow. They play the same shit all the time, and have more or less completely isolated Raleigh from most new and alternative rock (my genre of choice)." |
They stopped playing it because the format is dead. Where have you been? What decade are you stuck in? Relative to other commercial genres, mainstream rock has been in a slow steady commercial decline for a decade.
Quote : | "Every time I turn on G105 I feel like I'm in a trashy club in Jersey. Maybe I'm just listening at the wrong times lol." |
That's what people want to hear. That's why a lot of mainstream pop artists that have been around for a while have changed their sound. It's kind of like how Rod Stewart did a disco song, and Bruce Springsteen started using 80s synthesizers. They are just keeping up with the times because they don't want to be commercially irrelevant.4/13/2011 6:14:22 PM |

wolfpackgrrr nailed it. I worked in the radio broadcasting industry for 4 years from 1999-2003. Granted it was as a traffic reporter for MetroNetworks/Westwood One (proof here: http://bit.ly/OldMetroStudioPics and http://bit.ly/MeRDUMetronetworks) and not a "radio station" but we were close enough to the day to day operations of triangle radio stations at Curtis & Clear Channel to see the homogenization of radio here in the triangle. Really the only programming that might be unique to an FM station these days is the morning show. Evenings and overnights are often voicetracked from outside the local market. It is not uncommon for an overnight DJ to be from another state and voicetrack that entire nights programming ahead of time. For me I listen to Brad & Britt Morning Show on WZTK 101.1FM on the way into work and NPR on the way home. Other than those 2 I usually have the FM Radio off and the public safety Scanner Radios on. 4/13/2011 7:14:35 PM |

That channel sucks! I heard three songs in a row last Friday at 3:00 pm and on Saturday at about the same time I heard the same three songs in the same order. One of the songs was "Stronger Everyday" by Chicago. They only have about 30 albums and 4 greatest hits albums. I'm pretty sure they could find about 15 different songs by Chicago that are popular enough to be played on the radio.4/13/2011 10:19:40 PM |

Yea I have been blown away by how shitty the music is around here. I have been a faithful XMer since about 2003, so I rarely listen to terrestrial radio. However I killed my charger about a month ago, and got an iPod Touch from work. I tried listening some, but have just completely switched over to my playlist instead of FM.
Quote : | "Can Raleigh even pick up 100.3?" |
No, apparently not. I caught that station last year when vacationing around central NC and was in my wife's car with no satrad and really enjoyed that station. Good mix of newer/older music and not too repetitive. I have tried as far as Chapel Hill on my commute and can't pick it up. I listen to music sometimes when I go to sleep and am stuck with 96.1 on my alarm clock radio. I miss when 106.1 was classic rock, so 96.1 covered mostly newer music. Lately 96 Rock just blows. Can't wait to replace that charger and get some decent rock music again.4/13/2011 11:42:23 PM |

that's one model
just like a television station is an ad-selling operation that happens to play sitcoms/game shows/reality dreck
BUT there are premium stations out there, just like there are the HBOs, Showtimes and AMCs on TV
quality is contagious once people realize they don't have to consume crap the demand for higher quality programming will grow and media companies will have no choice but to meet the demand or perish
unfortunately, the larger the company the slower it moves4/14/2011 3:59:05 AM |

Yeah, that happens. They want to market the new song to drive sales of the new album.
This is just me making things up, but I remember that back in the day you couldn't go 5 minutes without hearing one of about three or four Hootie & the Blowfish songs on the radio (this part is true, the rest is speculation). I think people finally snapped, called in bomb threats to radio stations or whatever, radio stations finally got the hint and they disappeared as quickly as they became popular.
I can understand overplay of the latest pop song. People that follow those artists want to hear their new stuff and they want to hear it all the time. What I don't get is overplay of the older stuff. Stations are so bad that I've regularly heard a song, say on my way to a fast food place, and I'll hear that same song again on the same station on my way back home after I'm done eating, and I don't take a loooooooong time to eat either. They probably have about 20 songs in their play list, enough to cover about 90 minutes with commercials. They might rotate 5 songs in/out every cycle to "keep it fresh".
I found that WKNC and WSHA are good if you check their schedules and listen during certain times of the week/day. WKNC isn't what they used to be. Once upon a time you could turn to that station and chances are it would be something cool. Now you have to check their schedule and align your listening to their good stuff. WKNC - 99% of the time there's a reason those bands you play are independent label.

Well I decided to listen to Radio 96 aka 96.1 FM in the Triangle because I am sick of hearing the same songs over and over again on the same stations. That channel has gotten sort of strange. I turned it to 96.1 the other day and Journey was playing. That was followed by Eminem, which was followed by Don Henley. The order they play songs in is sort of strange. Then this morning they were playing Taylor Swift. My rotation is 100.7, 102.9, and 96.1. 5/6/2015 12:20:06 AM |
