Is Crabtree considered North Raleigh?

North Raleigh sucks. Most miserable 2 years of living in my life. Had the nice big house, yard, etc. And hated it.

no. Millions of kids are raised just fine in Chicago, NYC, Boston, etc just fine every year. City does not equal shitty childhood. It just means different than your childhood, but not automatically a bad one.

I couldn't disagree more. But, I have recently realized that there are two types of people in general when it comes to home selection. One measures their happiness by their own dwelling and the other by those things that are around them. I am the latter. I could have te perfect home, but if you picked it up and dropped it in North Raleigh I would be miserable, even though my actual possession, the home itself, is the same. My condo in Atlanta is roughly 1/4 the size of my house in Raleigh. But, I am literally smack in the middle of the densest, most urban, neighborhood in the south and I love it infinitely more than my big ass house. Piedmont Park is my back yard, I have over 200 restaurants/bars within a mile, Marta is two blocks away so I am 15 traffic free minutes away from anything at the Dome or the Braves, 4 museums that i go to all the time are in my neighborhood etc. You don't just get that anywhere.

this is what really motivated my post
I was working out in north Raleigh at a number of bars, each seemingly 15 minutes away from each other, and most of the people I encountered fit this profile - or were the children of such people

it is amazing the number of people I encounter with a staple in their license (indicative of a DUI or some other criminal charge), an Identification Card (also indicative of a DUI) or no ID at all thanks to a DUI

and to answer the haters that think I got too big for my britches in NYC:
there are parts of Raleigh that I quite like specifically BECAUSE they are different: downtown, Mordecai, the campus area

besides, I couldn't get too BIG for my britches in New York because I walked everywhere - if anything they were loose and falling off (this has changed since I moved back to Raleigh where we drive all day)

I agree 100%. its nice having a sizable back yard where the dogs can roam free, have a fire pit, work shop and large patio. i wouldn't give that up for a condo downtown if it was free.

amen synapse. i own a place downtown and lived in it for 5 years. i loved living downtown - it's a great place to live when you're single. but now i live more in the "suburbs" near Cary/Crossroads and i really thought i would have a hard time adjusting but i didnt

People have different living requirements. Take my old friend Omar for instance.

I just don't see how coming home every nigh to your family 10 miles from downtown makes you miss out on all the culture/eateries/bars that a city has to offer. Unless you simply can't not drink how is this an issue. Just sounds like he hates the entire area, which is absolutely his choice.

Nothing surprising there... If that's going by pure # of places then it's just stupid. If it's including metro areas, which I am sure it is, then I totally agree, that's why I don't live in that part of the Atlanta area, it's shit just like North Raleigh but 5 times the size. Proves my point actualy, I've lost 30lbs (aka one Bobby Digital disgusting schnozz) since I moved from North Raleigh to Midtown Atlanta.

^ For me, its due to my career (city and regional planning, engineering). There is so much stuff that the general public is just completely ignorant about and they dont take it into account when making housing choices. All they see is "big yard, big bonus room, quiet street" but they dont think about things like:

streets with garages facing the road typically have higher crime rates (due to lack of eyes on the street, or more importantly, perceived eyes on the street), criminals are more likely to do something when a street of blank walls is facing them rather than a street of front porches and windows. This is why I will never live in a neighborhood that has front facing garages... that and they look like shit too.

Suburban roads are usually wider to allow for fire trucks to get to places since you usually dont have a grid pattern (due to "safe" cul-de-sacs, but, these wider streets lead to people speeding so those streets are actually LESS safe overall even with the help the provide to fire trucks.

Most people think highways are "free" but transit costs me money, they are either unaware of the gas tax, or more likely, don't even think about it because its lumped in, its not coming directly out of their wallet like a transit pass does... etc.

If you are actually really interested, and not just trolling Jaybee, read a book called Suburban Nation. It will open your eyes, its the fucking red pill of city planning. Very easy read too, not technical or boring at all.

I used to hate how many traffic lights there were between downtown and N. Raleigh. Capital Blvd and Wake Forest Rd/Falls of Neuse were the banes of my existence.

I can see how it would be cool if you wanted the N. Raleigh lifestyle, but as long as most of your friends live near downtown, most of the restaurants you enjoy are near downtown, and most of the bars/clubs/venues you enjoy are close to downtown it can be a real drag.

I totally understand why other people are happy there as long as they have good neighbors though. It's easy to hop on 540 and get to RTP, relatively low crime, and provides easy access to places like Falls Lake. There is also a lot more in the way of food (both prepared and unprepared) and entertainment than back when I was living out there.

Still, at this point in my life I prefer the OFF KAPLAN region of Raleigh. Quick access to the beltline, easy access to downtown, convenient shopping with Crossroads just three miles away, and Lake Johnson/Kent/Centennial parks.

You guys hating on downtown living do know there are houses with yards downtown right? I would love to buy a cottage downtown in the Boylan Heights or North Blount Street area. You get the house, yard, and museums within walking distance. If they would finally throw a supermarket into one of those skyscrapers they're building it would be pretty much perfect for me.

The majority of people who have 3000+ square foot dwellings rarely use half their space effectively.

Do you really need a dining room AND a breakfast nook? A den AND a living room? A foyer AND and an entryway? No. Families with several kids do fine in 1200 square foot condos. Its all about figuring out what you actually need and getting rid of 90% of the clutter that so many Americans love to collect.

Different strokes, but give me half the space in the city everytime. Fuck mowing my yard, fuck clearing leaves out of my gutters, and fuck my faggot neighbors who ask me to water their plants and feed their cats everytime they go away.

yeah im neither one

i lived in a double-wide size brickhouse near "the projects" in Dunn growing up and then my parents moved into this HUGE victorian style house in the country when i was in middle school.
i lived in the middle of milan italy for 3 months (an old nothing worked apartment in the city) and then in a old rented out house in new jersey . (right outside of NY and with 7 other people!)
then i moved to raleigh and stayed on campus (mind you it was UT)
then i lived in various apartments around campus and eventually in an apartment right off of glenwood.
now i'm living in cary suburbia.


my point-i've lived in all sorts of places in all sorts of houses.
i'm pretty good at adapting and feeling comfortable with my surroundings regardless of what it may be. i don't care where i live-i'll have fun.


i thank my parents a lot for it...there wasn't SHIT to o where i grew up so i learned how to entertain myself pretty well. i hope i can do that with my kids
