You only suck because you weren't taught how to use them in words you can understand.

No one is immune to typos. I know how to spell most of the words I typo on this site.

I just assumed you made a typo. It's not a big deal.

What grammar do you need for a street address? Holy shit you're stupid.

Quote :
"When employees are writing addresses, they must be precise and accurate spelling or else you create a mathimatical probability of error."

*Mathematical

Quote :
"In other words, the only way to eliminate ambiguity is to spell the name 100% correct, 100% of the time."

Set realistic expectations. 100% correct 100% of the time is not possible for street names.

Quote :
"It gets trickier when the customers don't know how to spell their own street name!! "

You can't blame the employee for the customer's stupidity. It's a bad situation for you, but to blame the employee is ridiculous.

Quote :
"If someone writes down "Dawfin Ln" there is no way for me to know if it's Daulphin Ln or Dolphin Lane off the top of my head."

How is the employee going to know too? Especially since you're living in an area where people have different accents. It very well could be "Dawfin Ln" or "Dolphin Ln" or "Daulphin Ln." So please, explain to me how your employee's shit poor spelling is going to be damning? At the very least the employee should be asking the customer to spell the street name every time...

And your initial bitching wasn't about street names, it was about them not knowing how to spell "sausage"...

Quote :
"It is increasingly frustrating and infuriating when they say they don't remember what they heard."

Out of curiosity, how much do you pay your employees?

100% correct 100% of the time is a realistic goal. I am 99.9% accurate. I'll make one error in every 1000 orders I get. I am talking about a personal error, not an error created by the customer. How is this possible? It's called procedures. If you follow the algorithm, you can't get it wrong. It is only when a rule is violated that errors occur.

When you open your business, let your employees know that messing up is perfectly okay. Striving to be perfect is impossible and should never be attempted.

So what algorithm do you follow for spelling? What algorithm is there for street names? How does the employee know if it's "Dawlfin Ln", "Dolphin Ln" or "Daulphin Ln"? I don't know about you, but if someone gives me an address, I verify what it is with the person before ending the conversation. If you haven't established this procedure with your employees, then instead of pointing your finger at the education system and inbreed rednecks you should look at the mirror blame yourself for not establishing the procedure.

But this is the typical GeniuSxBoY attitude. Everything is everyone else's fault and nothing is your fault.

You can't even figure out how to use spell check...

Wow. The issues that GeniuSxBoY is having with his employees has absolutely nothing to do with their ability to spell and would not be solved by teaching spelling "rules" to his employees. This is an issue with procedure and/or your employee's abilities to efficiently follow procedure. There is little you can do about a customer's inability to spell their own address unless you can adapt your policies to eliminate errors originating with the customer.

My husband is in management and deals with similar address issues in shipping expensive merchandise. They occasionally have problems with merchandise going to incorrect addresses or old addresses that are not updated either by the employee or the customer. This was a chronic issue several months ago and I helped him brainstorm to adapt SOP to reduce these errors. You need to come up with a system that takes into consideration your customer base AND your employee talent pool.

If you think that your current system is fool proof and your employees simply "fuck up" and don't verify addresses properly, then you need to discipline your employees or straight out start firing.

as long as the drivers understand where they are supposed to go there isnt a problem. if there are two roads with similar names, the order-taker should clarify which is which and if they are unaware that there was another similarly named road they can just call the customer to clarify.

on friday i ordered pizza and the guy took down my road name wrong. a few minutes later i got a call back and they explained that there were a couple roads with similar names and they weren't sure where the pizza was going. i clarified which road and they said they would be here in 7 minutes and arrived on time.

If you really have a Daulphin lane and Dolphin lane then spelling isn't going to help you, how is the order-taker supposed to know which homophone the caller is asking for? they should simply ask the customer, "dolphin lane near whatever or daulphin lane near whatever."

spelling isn't the issue here, you don't need perfect spelling to make and deliver pizza and you certainly don't need appropriate grammar.

however, if you would like smarter employees who do a better job as the face of your company its your job to find them. if the walk in applicants aren't cutting it you are going to need to recruit somewhere, and you may need to pay someone more to attract a higher-level employee. but you already knew all of that, because you are an expert business man. in fact, i'm on pins and needles here waiting for your book series and dvd's on how to run a business.

Let's get the fact straight in the thread.

I am complaining about the nuisances of ordinary spelling by the high school graduating classes of circa 2005 til current.

In no way did I say it hinders business to the point of destruction.
In no way did I say I can't teach my employees the right procedures to make less mistakes.
In no way did I say these graduates can't spell. As a matter of fact, they CAN spell, they just need to be taught....keyword: correctly.

How do I know that they're not retarded? Because when I spend time with them, they actually learn things. I've been working with one girl for 6 months on her spelling. She can spell over 200 words common words that she told me she'd never be able to learn.

Do I have the right to complain? Damn straight I do. Why? Because it's not my job to be a teacher. We have people on the state payroll to do that job. They aren't doing their job.

I'm "forced" to teach the kids because as mistakes happen they have to know what caused it, why it was wrong, and how to fix it. A mistake is doomed to repeat itself if not corrected immediately.

Quote :
"3. you teach them unnecessary stuff like cursive"

I only teach them things that present itself as a problem. When an employee is describing a beer as "non-fitted", I had to say "WTF? Where does it say that?" She points to cursive writing that says "non-filtered". I asked why she couldn't read that an she told me "Nobody's ever taught me cursive. I just guessed."

The moral of the story, I taught her cursive in 15 minutes. Viola! Now she can read cursive.

Quote :
"4. you're creating your own problem"

In this business, so many problems create themselves that I don't really need to create my own problems. I try to solve them in the order they present themselves.

Part of the job of being a manager is being able to identify the talents as well as the limitations of your staff and putting them in a position to succeed. This can be done through additional training or implementing processes that would limit the risk of an under qualified employee. In other words, it sounds like you are not a good manager.

Telling your employees that they don't have to be perfect is not the same as expecting them to be perfect. You let them know you have high expectations upfront but then behind the scenes you don't get extremely angry unless someone is messing up a high % of orders.

Besides, you have to look at the scope of where you are working and the kind of employees that environment attracts. Yes our school system isn't great, but there is also a lot of fault that needs to be placed on the students themselves as well as the parents.
