I think I say my name very country and recently learned how to say the word "water" instead of "wuh-der". I really got offended when I was in California and this dike thought I was from Alabama. It is offensive. She is basically saying I sound like Forrest Gump.

I am surprised. I am told that I have a pretty strong accent. I used to not have one, but when I moved to NC, old habits die hard.

My gf is from Greensboro and points out when I sound redneck. I wonder how bad it would be if I dated someone from CA or NY.

I consciouslly have to make myself say water and when I hear my parents say it now I cringe. Not being redneck is my sole pursuit in life.

I got neutral. Seems accurate, even though I've lived in NC my whole life -- my dad's from Illinois and I guess I patterned my accent off of his. At first it was unintentional, later it was because I figured I sounded smarter.

However, if I'm around certain people -- and especially if I've had a couple of drinks -- I get southern real quick.

i moved from NC to florida when i was 2 and lived there til i was 12...i guess thats a pretty crucial time period in the acquisition of accents.

alotta dumbfucks where I grew up pronounce "bag" and "beg" in almost the same way

BTW it's hard to describe how I pronounce "oil"; it's as close as possible to getting all of the sounds in one syllable: "o" followed by something between "y" and "ee" followed by something between "l" and "ull"

Also, ViolentMAW, I thought "phone" was supposed to rhyme with "own" although I usually pronounce it with the Spanish "o" (like the English long "o" but without that "w" sound at the end, thereby sounding a bit shorter)

Odd, since I DO pronounce "stock" and "stalk" differently. I have a slight southern accent, only some words do I apparently have a accent become expressed. Parents are from the midwest and the southren midwest. I grew up on british english, NPR english, and my parents english. Thus my accent is very flat in general. Typically no one can really tell where I am from.

Personally I find British accents to be the easiest, in terms of telling where they are from. They get very specific.
