noticing a bit of lag 6/2/2011 4:39:11 PM |

Server restarted. It looks like adding the nether nearly doubles the memory needs.
I'll monitor it a little more closely as people play this weekend and upgrade the memory again next week if the lag persists.
Also and FYI, server will be down June 6th 7-10pm mountain time (host is undergoing maintenance) 6/2/2011 6:07:45 PM |

so if someone enters the nether and provokes the zombie pigmen does that mean they will attack anyone that enters now???
I went in a few times last night and left them alone and as soon as I went back today they instantly attacked. 6/2/2011 6:38:50 PM |

well me and jcdomini did a little research and it looks like when anyone enters the nether the pigmen will attack. However, you can do a /sethome from the nether that only works there so you can build a fortress there and still be safe. So you have a home in the nether and a different one in the normal world. When you do /spawn from the nether it will take you back to the normal world but in a random(but always the same) place, not sure if its the same for everyone. 6/3/2011 1:33:49 AM |

I would totally be in on this if I could. My laptop is currently borked.
Gonna have to wait until I get back to the States to see if it's even fixable. 6/3/2011 3:18:35 AM |

^^Yeah when you do /spawn from the nether it takes you to the raw server spawn, instead of the plugin bukkit spawn. You should be able to do another /spawn once in the normal world to drop you back in the middle of the town. 6/3/2011 3:50:25 AM |

so cool to see the old map back, especially with the nether. since the nether brings everyone closer together, i could imagine some pretty neat shit being built there 6/4/2011 2:43:49 PM |

I'm interested to see how we develop the nether as well - anyone have any ideas? Also, not sure how to prevent pigmen/ghast spawning inside bases. From what I understand, you have to fall back on the half-block, stairs, or glass floor methods, so might want to keep that in mind since the pigmen are being so aggressive.
Also, anyone have any ideas for inspiration on what to build? Kind of hit a rut and I'm stuck on what to do next. 6/4/2011 8:56:13 PM |

The lag is getting really bad lately. It's almost unplayable after a little while. Do we really need nether support? You could cut way down on hardware requirements if you only ran one world. 6/5/2011 11:48:35 AM |

yeah without a reliable server restarting script, I'd been doing it manually. Been out of town this weekend so it's run longer than usual.
Just bumped the memory to 2gb, which should be enough to support the nether and our player base. 6/5/2011 1:54:50 PM |

I've been having issues with the teleport commands as well - seems that sometimes it can't load the chunk you're teleporting to fast enough, so it never loads once you're in it and you end up stuck in the chunk error. Relog usually fixes it, but I imagine it's just a server lag issue and a reboot would take care of it. 6/5/2011 3:53:58 PM |

Yup just installed it. What hardware are you using? I've got a 5mbit upload connection and my server is just an older Conroe 1.8ghz with 2 gigs of ram (my media server). Debating whether that will be sufficient for a couple players or if I should just go ahead and host it on my desktop.
-oh and FYI you don't ever need to add the port to a URL. Minecraft knows which port to use. So "mc.thewolfweb.com" works.

Yes you do. I'm using a shared hosting service. If you don't use the port, you won't be logging into our server. You'll be logging into the shared server's root map.
The tww server is on a full 100mbit uplink. Hardware specs I posted on the first page, here again: Dual Intel Westmere X5675 Hex-Core 3.06ghz CPUs, 24GB of DDR3 RAM, a 1000mbit port, and dual Micron RealSSD 50GB SSD drives in RAID-1 via a BBU-enabled Adaptec RAID card.
Minecraft isn't really cpu intensive. disk access is by far the biggest bottleneck. Yeah for a couple of people that should be plenty. 6/11/2011 3:46:42 AM |

So the only issue i'm having is I'm seeing glitches where big sections of the map will be empty and you can see through them. Logging off/back in will fix this. Solutions? Due to my hardware? 6/12/2011 12:17:03 AM |
wawebste All American 19599 Posts user info edit post |
^prob not due to the hardware, it seems to happen a lot on smp servers....noen may know more about why but it def. happens every now and then on TWW server. Also seen it happen in minecraft videos like the yogscast so its not uncommon.
I think it has more to do with chunk errors/rendering in minecraft than it does the server itself

It's because of Notch's shitty server code.
On the tww server I installed the BananaChunk plugin to at least prevent people from falling/warping into missing chunks. It'll auto-load missing chunks as you touch them. 6/12/2011 1:28:15 AM |

How exactly does it work? What is automated?
-I'll give it a shot. From what I understand it allows the user to request a chunk resend which should reload the area?

How often does Bukkit save the map or should I install the Bukkit autosave plugin? 6/12/2011 1:30:49 PM |
Noen All American 31346 Posts user info edit post |
^it doesn't. you gotta get pluginz 6/12/2011 2:55:47 PM |
Noen All American 31346 Posts user info edit post |
Upgraded to bukkit recommended build 860. Should resolve a bunch of chunk problems and performance should get better. Removed the banana chunk plugin, since the bukkit build fixes those problems.
As for the missing work, it looks like the Regios plugin had a problem last night with the auto-heal in spawn and prevented the auto-save from working. When I went in to reboot the server this morning I forgot to do a force save first. Sorry about that guys
Turned off auto-heal in spawn, and updated the plugins to coincide with bukkit 860. 6/12/2011 2:58:56 PM |
neodata686 All American 11577 Posts user info edit post |
^^Thanks. Got it now.
^Yeah just upgraded to the 860 build. Still have the banana chunk plugin though. It allows a manual chunk reload which might be useful but you're saying build 860 fixes all chunk issues? I can't see it hurting by keeping it installed.
-and I'm noticing slow map load times when you warp across the map. Due to using a traditional HDD. Moved it over to my desktop with an SSD. Big improvement. Might need to pick up a cheap SSD for my server.
-also is there an established live map plugin? One that works and everyone uses? Dynmap maybe?

^if you're running your own server, setup overviewer. It's amazing. Haven't figured out how to get it to work with my shared host though.
Otherwise just get the dynmap plugin. it works, but much more simple.
