^Not sure WTF psych eval you need. I guess I have it because I will eat a big mexican dinner and sometimes my stomach starts roiling and churning and 5 minutes after I get up from dinner I will need to shit so bad I almost can't make it home. I also get the whole one month blowing out diarrhea, the next month constipated thing going.

But I don't go crying to the doctor about it. Just know how to deal with it and try to take in plenty of fiber to keep stuff running regular, so I don't get at the extremes. I honestly think a lot of the "triggers" I see people talking about are things make normal people need to shit. A few cups of coffee, and yea sometimes I need to drop a deuce. Stress can fuck up a lot of peoples body.

And I love the people that get diagnosed and cry about this are also the ones with made up diseases like chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. By made up I mean that their is no physical proof of them, rather its an issue in the brain or nervous system. Also apparently smoking weed helps treat it, per Wikipedia.

That doesn't sound like IBS though. I always consider IBS to be associated with sharp, stabbing stomach pains.

If IBS is just a need to use the restroom, then almost every food is a "trigger" food.

IBS is also usually diagnosed when the person has to use the bathroom when they get nervous or anxious. high anxiety can cause a trigger and that's usually the telling sign someone has IBS.

food is also a big trigger but anxiety and stress are also very important to note as well.

i thought that 94% statistic was probably some form of wikipedia vandalism, but it appears there is a study to back it up

wow...

The reason why you see so many psych disorders with it, IMO, is because you see it with so many other GI conditions, which can cause depression, paranoia, etc.

For example, celiac or a gluten intolerance can be associated with IBS and both of those can cause some major psych issues

Not sure if I need to post ITT yet...

[Edited on September 16, 2011 at 10:16 AM. Reason : The pysch issues could be arising from your body's reaction to a certain food]

i was kinda thinking it was the other way around - the psych issue causing the shits

i am in no way qualified to make such statements

but just like anxiety can make your heart race or affect your breathing, perhaps anxiety can affect your bowels

No I think thats part of it, too

But a big portion is also how certain foods affect your body. For another example, people with celiac or gluten intolerance can cause paranoia - and when people are gluten free they usuall don't have that feeling (I'm sure some still do because of other factors)

One issue i have with IBS is also how many people are misdiagnosed with it and might have something more serious going on

BTTT! UGH

I've had constant stomach pain for 2 weeks now. Worse after meals.

This is the worst. I think I need to see a doctor. Should I talk to an internist or gastroenterologist?

Stress is the worst one for me

I've also noticed that I go through cycles of how bad it gets. Sometimes I'll go for a month or more with symptoms maybe once a week or so. Other times I have issues every day. During the bad times I will sometimes not eat for so long that I'll almost pass out, just so I can avoid the inevitable bathroom trips. Also, does anyone else notice a daily cycle? I usually have the worst symptoms in the morning.

What kind of medications have you tried? I'm a slave to Pepto and Immodium, but I also had a gastroenterologist prescribe Levsin. It helps with the stomach pains (considered an antispasmodic) but doesn't do much for the, erm, other issues... I almost participated in a clinical research trial a few months ago, but you have to go medication-free for six weeks before the study, and I couldn't promise that.

I usually have issues after 3 or 4 meals a week, typically when I consume dairy or whey, but lately the pain has been constant. It started back with a vengeance 2 weeks ago when gastroenteritis put me in the hospital. Since then, everything and anything leaves my stomach in knots, gurgling and in spasms. I'm sure part of it is stress ... being so sick definitely added to my stress.

I've been living on crackers and soup for about 2 weeks now. Everything else (eggs, chicken, sushi, salad, etc) causes debilitating stomach cramps and runs to the bathroom).

Tums don't help. Not sure if it's an allergy or a bug, but ready to see a doc to figure it out. What can I expect from a doc appointment? Do they take my blood for allergies? What other tests would they typically do as a preliminary measure?

The first gastro I visited ran a pretty extensive series of tests... so many that I can't remember them all. I had blood work done to rule out celiac disease, iron deficiencies, etc. They tested stool (gross, btw) for parasites, fat levels, and other things. I had some sort of MRI done where I drank this chalky gross white concoction that would show up on the image to rule out blockages or tears in my system. He even went as far as to do a colonoscopy to rule out Crohn's.

When all the tests came back negative, he told me it was IBS and there was really nothing to do about it but live with it. That's when I left his practice and went to another doctor. She was more understanding, but still just wrote me the Levsin scrip and sent me on my way.

And to address the issue of psychological issues associated with IBS... if you had to constantly worry about what you were eating, make sure there was always a bathroom where you were going, couldn't do a lot of activities because of your symptoms, were constantly concerned about the occurrence of symptoms, and had to hide all of this for fear of embarrassment, don't you think you would be subject to depression, higher levels of anxiety, fatigue, or more?

Y'all should read, "Romance, Riches, and Restrooms"

Living with IBS with humor is how I would describe it.
