I have said before (not in this thread, but in another I think) that it can give you useful info... My friend found out he was a carrier for hemochromatosis via 23andMe. FWIW, I was considering having it done once I got my student loan next fall. No need to be uppity...

I wasn't being uppity. I was laughing (ie having fun), talking about what the results were, esp since joie was interested. If anybody got their panties in a wad, it was you. Trying to ruin all the fun talking about how much you dislike the tests, then backpedaling saying you're gonna get one too. I don't get it.

I'm not mad & I'm going to continue enjoying my DNA tests results.

I never said I completely dislike them, I even crossed it out and said that was a strong word. But I am going to bring up the disadvantages because the fact still remains it's not a perfect test, and sometimes can be misleading even if meant for entertainment value. In fact, one example would be how you thought it tested you for the breast cancer gene mutation and the standard testing is only offered through Myriad (23andMe only tests for a few mutatations found in the Ashkenazi Jewish population that aren't patented).

I was just trying to make conversation with you and was never disgruntled (because believe or not I don't actually hate or loathe the tests), but obviously you only like to see solid praise for DTC testing. People are allowed to have reservations about it, just like others are allowed to enjoy it.

Nope, I actually am not a huge fan of Myriad either. I will be one of the people trying to help patients understand these tests, though. It's a big deal in the genetics field right now.

I might be off, but I think the two of you are really arguing the same thing. That DTC testing is good for entertainment purposes but not a diagnosis.

In reality they are more than Entertainment, some of the genetic markers are very accurate while others are still under researched

^ This is true. I just wish people were more informed about what they're receiving, and more about the testing companies/processes in general. The big companies all use different markers, so while one says you're at an increased risk for x symptom, disease, what have you, another could say you're at a decreased risk. I mean, let's face it - I doubt the average American (hell, the average general physician) could even tell you what a SNP is and IMO people need to take the time to thoroughly investigate what they're getting into. It's all fun and games until you see something serious on your test result and don't know what to do with it. Then you have issues of regulation (or lack thereof).

Anywho, once there's more community education and regulation with them I'll be more gung-ho. It definitely is the wave of the future (if that's a good way to explain it). Personalized medicine is blowing up.
