After 8 years and probably a dozen roommates, I've come to the conclusion that the best roommate is almost always the one who is never there.

I had a roommate that ate cereal and ice cream out of a giant dog bowl. I'm also pretty sure his blood was made from Coke the amount he drank. Other than that a nice guy.

And then there was the African with the stinky stew that abandoned his room under cover of night. He was a weird dude.

Actually I was thinking I'd cut somebody a hell of a deal on being my roommate and helping take care of my dog and two cats.

she's saving herself for marriage so whoever does end up being her first....will hopefully already know what they're in for

also she is very awkward about talking about god with me. i have no probs with people who church it up do whatever you want. i go to church sometimes too, but this girl is like

"do you ever just talk to god?"
"sometimes, when i talk to god, it just makes me feel so much better" ::sighhhh::

ok weirdo, keep your shit to yourself. whether i talk to god or not is really not your business and im not going to talk about it while biggest loser is on, talk about shitting timing

oh and i think she passed her exam because while i was working in the other room (which shares a wall with her bedroom) i heard her squealing like a pig....to no one....

she also leaves lights on ALL THE TIME, including the 52" LCD which uses no power right? ugh even when shes not watching it (for "noise" she says but its on mute, wtf)

in may i raised rent on her by $50 bc its summer

im hoping that she gets a job thats far enough way (in houston) that she has to move. it would be wonderful. then i could get another roommate with different issues to drive me crazy

I happen to know of one who's about 37 by now. Virgin. Catholic.

Could be attractive. Kinda big. But I like thick.

But good lord, the dogma that would come with it...

^^^LOL

I've lived alone for about 3 years now and it's fabulous
I had roomates, then I lived alone, then with (ex) fiance, and now back to living alone.
I'm poor as fuck but I'll be damned if I get roomates again.

Living alone would basically guarantee that I become a hermit. When you're an introvert, it's good to live with people that force you out of your shell from time to time. I could afford to get a studio apartment...or I could pay a third of the price and live with my friends. It's an easy decision for me, even if it's less than optimal at times.

I can't see myself having a roommate ever again. I guess I'll have to when/if I eventually get married. Perhaps if I have a serious girlfriend again.... but I'm not too thrilled with that idea.

1 - good guy, business undergrad, didn't really like the south too much transferred to michigan

2 - good guy, comp sci, gamer

3 - good guy, gay, would rarely have a guy over, I'd just try harder to pass out. (though overall very nice and no issues) I mostly had the dorm room to myself.

4, 5, 6 - 4 - big pot head, nice and ocd about cleaning which was also nice, me and him were the only ones to clean up after ourselves, gamer and former HS football player. 5 - redneck, often drunk but a good quality guy, bit messy but nothing extreme. 6 - neutral, kinda messy, would have his girlfriend over and demand that everyone leave the entire apartment, then they would have extremely loud sex. 4 and 6 did NOT get along.

7, 8, 9 - all good friends, still really good friends with 8 and 9, 7 just out of touch since she got married (twwer to twwer). 8 - semi messy but nice and cooperative ROTC guy, still great friends with, (was in my wedding). 9 - very messy but nice, very stubborn, physics major, still good friends I see him pretty often.

10 - nice very funny guy from HS, minor issues over kitchen cleaning and food purchasing, overall good guy, I don't talk to him nearly enough.

Now I have the wife, and her roommate in Raleigh (in Greensboro it's just us two). Her roommate is awesome though, cooks and does a ton of yard work.

Overall I've had pretty good roommates.

in college I lived with a girl who was bulimic - she would throw up in cups/mugs/bottles/soda cans/etc and leave them around the house

it took ONE time for me to be like "oh is that a smoothie?" to learn to never ever ever touch any beverage receptacle that wasn't mine

1st roommate was a randomly-assigned computer science or engineering guy. Nice dude, but extremely awkward and never seemed to leave the room -- it was either Counterstrike or anime with him all the time.

2nd roommate was my good friend from high school. When it was just us we got along great. But he brought back a LOT of women. Looking back, I can't remember if he asked me to leave or if I just didn't want to be in the room with him and the endless train of harlots, but either way I was exiled from my own quarters much of the time. Eventually he played a prank on me involving a webcam, yada yada yada, I started drinking after a lifetime of teetotalling. But we're good now.

3rd place -- An IT guy and a forestry guy. Like both of them fine, but their relationships were problematic (one had a VERY messy breakup with a gf who, it turned out, owned a lot of shit we used daily. The other was banging the landlord's daughter)

4th -- Same IT guy, another dude who was trying to join the navy because he broke his legs (long story).

5th -- My then-girlfriend. Yes, I made poor choices. I acknowledge that now. Also, eight pet rats (!), two kittens, and, if I'd stayed with her another month, probably a walrus, komodo dragon, cassowary, and wildebeast.

6th -- Back with the IT guy.

7th -- Two lawyers (one of whom did the aforementioned webcam trick). I hate lawyers.

I actually kind of liked most of them (though not the expense they represented...). The only one that I hated was the rescue, Leroy, who was huge and bitey.

It was alright...they lived in my "office," so if I was on the computer or something I'd seal off the room, open the cage, let them run around. Let 'em sit on my shoulders and clean my hair, shit like that.

not so much a roommate, but a suitemate my freshman year.

i would walk in the bathroom and see him in a stall, taking a poo. he would have a lil' dino's sandwich unwrapped on the floor, enjoying it while he took a dump. he also played death metal on his discman while all this was happening. he would spend around 30-45 minutes in there each time.

update!!

so the kitchen has been bothering me a lot lately. as you read in my original post there are lots of things happening in there. that is probably 95% of my problem. creepy self-talk and random crying aside, just "reset" the kitchen like a fucking adult when you're done. wash your shit, throw trash away and wipe down the counters. im not asking for the clorox treatment but be respectful, right?

so it came to a head this morning. she had to drive to austin for 2 job interviews today so she was gone early. this is rare as she normally sleep until 11am. again, i dont care just leave the common areas clean.

i go downstairs to make coffee & breakfast and find the following: 2 dirty pots sitting on the stove, a used cutting board with dirty paper towels splayed out on the counter (there isn't a lot of counter space as it is) a dishwasher full of dishes that have been clean for 24hours, a full trashcan and a drying rack stacked like jenga with her handwashed & now clean (and long time dry) dishes

i don't touch a thing, this is hard for me but i make my coffee and oatmeal and GTFO. i had a busy day planned today and knew i wouldn't be home until much after her. i planned on finally saying something when i got home no matter if the kitchen was martha stewart clean or the same

i come home.... and its worse. however, she is baking something so i understand that but all the messes i described earlier are still there plus more. and the trash bin has no bag in it. so i roll the big trash bin out to the curb for collection in the morning, get a new trash bag into the can as she is sitting down on the couch to watch her golden girls dvd and tell her i need to talk to her about something

she says "oh no that doesn't sound good"

i tell her i need to talk to her about the kitchen. it's a common space and i need her to do more to keep it clean. if trash is full, empty & replace bag, if dishes are dirty, wash or throw them into dishwasher before leaving etc....

she starts to tell me that she is really stressed out because she has no job and is looking (mind you, she just took & passed her exam so its not like she got laid off and has been struggling for work. she also got a job offer and turned it down because it was "too hard") she's also fighting with her mom and "now just isn't a good time" then she starts crying (quietly)

i dont' say anything more. i felt like i said i piece and i wasn't going to give her sympathy on stress or a job. i work full time and still manage to clean up after myself. so i put my junk mail into the trash and walk upstairs.

as i'm leaving the room she rushes back into the kitchen and starts doing her dishes. and now i hear the vacuum cleaner....

i can't believe she reacted the way she did but hopefully it gave her a jolt of reality and her little pity party needs to end bc its annoying as fuck

1st roommate in college (freshman year in the dorm) went home every weekend. So she was awesome

Sophomore year-senior year I lived with my 2 best friends. No hate there, but one was......well special. Always had random guys over, always drunk, had sex alllllll over the apartment. All of which was fine by me, until one time she had had "period sex" and decided to hang her "trophy" on our lamp. Trophy meaning the white t-shirt they had used to clean up with.

Then I lived alone and it was amazing.

New "roommate": Amazing.

I was the lease holder of 3 maiden ln. for 3 years, the rialto's friday night @ midnight rocky horror picture show's after party was my house for most of the 3 years due to having 5 bedrooms and an attic with carpet...basically i moved in with frat boys, ran them off, let a bunch of peers move in, and thus began the best/worst 3 years of my youth...couch on the curb on fire at 4am on a sunday? bo was tripping and had a lighter. had a section 8 marine roommate for a while, that was sweet cause he was super aggressive and liked knives way too much, had a kid die on my floor for a couple minutes due to combining jack and vals, countless altercations with bums, got robbed there once, had massive streetwide ragers, neighbors getting busted all teh time, shit was in-sane.

NCSUWolfy your roommate reminds me of the videos for Very Mary Kate. Don't know why but I picture that character when reading your posts about your roommate.

Seriously though that sucks. I guess I'm similar to you in the sense that I was always brought up to pick up after myself and keep the house clean and sometimes it's a battle with my boyfriend because he'll be like "why are you vacuuming again? Didn't you just do that?" But when it's two people and animals, sorry house needs to stay clean. I always thought it was normal to clean the house at least once a week, including the bathrooms and mopping the floors.

i just don't find it appealing to have a dirty kitchen to prepare my breakfast in. we're not in college anymore and we didn't just throw a party

also its not cool that the pot i was going to use to cook my dinner is dirty from someone else using it. i don't mind picking up after my bf and won't mind picking up after my children

my roommate however, does not have sex with me and didn't come out of my vagina, so no special treatment. sorry yo
