Can someone explain to me why grammar is different in soccer?

"USA are in full command" instead of "USA is in full command.

In soccer they use team names like mascot names. For example in NBA you would say

"The Lakers are in full command" but you would never say "Los Angeles are in full command"

I know some British people and they don't seem to use this often so it doesn't seem like a language barrier. However, I don't talk sports with my Brit friends.

I don't think it has anything to do with soccer, rather the announcer. You probably just hear British announcers whenever you watch soccer and equate the two.

British English tends to always use plural verbs with teams. ie "Los Angeles are in full command" like you listed earlier.

It's not a dumb rule but Solo obviously didn't break it.

Wahl is saying the retake was because other US players had entered the box before the kick was taken, which is also not allowed. I didn't look for that on the replay so I don't know. It makes sense though because I didn't see the linesman flag for Solo coming off her line and that's 100% her call. The center is the one watching everybody else.
