This is one of my really good friends...I haven't talked to him yet but according to his facebook he is REALLY shaken up about all this. I can't imagine having to deal with all that.

Stealing this from Sport's Talk:

Quote :
"Most people say I was the guy who was in the right place at the right time," Charles says nearly a quarter century after the most famous put-back in NCAA Tournament history. "Actually, I was in the wrong place at the right time, because as an offensive rebounder, the particular position I was standing in when Dereck (Whittenburg) shot the ball was the wrong place to be.

"I was standing under the cylinder, which is exactly where you don't want to be if you are going to be a decent offensive rebounder."

Some other good quotes in this article:

Quote :
"He used to try to dunk everything,'' Valvano once said of the player who eventually evolved into an All-ACC and All-America selection. "I mean everything. A little child walked by, and he tried to dunk him."

LOL at the second quote

Still, the real life relations in this thread make this even sadder

Quote :
"Valvano's brother, Nick Valvano, said he remembers when his brother recruited Charles.

"I remember him telling my mom, 'I got this Italian kid from Brooklyn. His name is Lorenzo Charles. I'd like you to meet him,'" Nick Valvano said laughing. "Here comes the biggest man in the world with this great big beautiful smile."

Valvano, who is the chief executive of the Jimmy V Foundation, said Charles' image was to appear on the front of invitations for the charity's annual auction. The invitations arrived from the printer on Friday.

"We were going to tell him as a surprise. I told the folks here, and they said, 'Oh my God, he'll love it,'" Valvano said. "It's not fair.""

I'm surprised no one has brought up a heart attack as the reason he wrecked.

RIP Lorenzo

hey, no disrespect intended... but i'm assuming he got a diploma, right???

did he just REALLY LOVE driving a bus or something??? i couldn't imagine having a degree from NCSU for 25 years and be a bus driver. maybe a pilot, that would be rad.... but bus driver doesn't seem fun or well-paying

My dad has a chemistry degree and drives tour buses on the side sometimes....he absolutely loves driving, loves new places, and loves to talk to people. So its pretty awesome for him.

[Edited on June 28, 2011 at 5:35 PM. Reason : ^Lorenzo also owned a transportation company (limos, buses, etc)]

My great uncle drove tour buses for a while. He was retired and had plenty of money.

word, i did not realize that there were so many people that chose to drive buses. I guess if I could do whatever I wanted all day, it wouldn't be drive other people.

that sucks, though. all around good guy.

I actually worked with Lorenzo about 11 years ago. Delivering drugs to pharmacies. He was there early...Like 5:00 a.m. or something to load the trucks. I thought it must have been incredibly frustrating for him considering how exciting his basketball career must have been.

He seemed incredibly fit for his age and pretty well-spoken, so I was always surprised he wasn't offered a career in sports. Broadcaster, promotor, salesperson, anything would have been a better fit than what he was doing. Maybe he didn't want or pursue that type of thing though. You never really know people's motivations.

RIP Lorenzo.

i saw something today that made me sad

i was driving on I-40 and at the scene of an accident (very noticeable because of the big patch of missing vegetation) there was a limo pulled over

in front of the limo the driver was standing, alone, looking down at his shoes

i know Lorenzo did some limo driving too, bet it was one of his buddies

ugh

i mean i dont imagine youd be willing to soil your hands dumping trash either, but people make an excellent living off it. Diplomas dont relegate you to sitting at a desk for the rest of your life. What do you do again? O yea, youre a pharmacist.

A funeral for Charles will take place Saturday at Wake Chapel Church in Raleigh.

Visitation begins at 10 a.m. before the 11 a.m. service. A private burial will follow, his wife said.
